The best time to post on Instagram is when your own followers are online, and Instagram's free Insights show you when that is. Five studies from 2026 disagree on the hour but lean toward midweek: four of the five name both Tuesday and Thursday among their best days. Treat them as a first guess, then test your own audience.

We read all five studies, and Instagram's own pages, on 12 October 2026. Nothing below is our own measurement.

What do the biggest studies say?

Five studies from social media tool makers give five different answers, and each counted something slightly different. Times are in your audience's local time unless noted.

Study Published What it counted Sample Best times it reports
Buffer 23 September 2026 Median engagement rate: likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers 9.6 million Instagram posts sent through Buffer, January 2024 to December 2025 Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m.
Sprout Social 31 March 2026 Total interactions on a post: reactions, comments, shares, direct messages and link clicks, varying by network Nearly 2 billion engagements on roughly 307,000 profiles across six networks, 27 November 2025 to 27 February 2026 Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m.
Hootsuite, with Critical Truth 14 July 2026 Engagement, not defined on the page More than 1 million posts from businesses, period not stated Monday 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday 5 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 5 p.m., Thursday 4 to 5 p.m.
SocialPilot No date shown Engagement rates, not defined 7 million posts from about 50,000 accounts connected to SocialPilot, February 2025 to 30 January 2026 7 to 9 a.m., with Tuesday to Thursday the best days
Later 21 April 2026 Engagement rates, formula not given More than 6 million feed posts, January to October 2024 5 a.m., with Monday the best day

Only Buffer and Sprout say what they counted. Hootsuite, SocialPilot and Later do not define engagement on the pages we read.

Why do the studies disagree?

Each study watched a different crowd for a different stretch of time. Buffer's posts went through Buffer, SocialPilot's came from about 50,000 accounts on SocialPilot, and Sprout's come from more than 30,000 of its customers. People who use a scheduling tool are not a sample of everyone on Instagram.

The periods differ too. Later's data ends in October 2024 although its article is dated April 2026, and Hootsuite's page mixes a 2025 analysis into a 2026 headline without giving a period.

Buffer adds a caution that applies to all of them: its times show when followers are using Instagram, not necessarily when they are most likely to engage. Buffer also says timing cannot save a weak post.

What is the best day to post on Instagram?

Midweek is the most common answer: four of the five studies name both Tuesday and Thursday among their best days. Here is how each one puts it:

  • Buffer: Wednesday first, then Thursday and Tuesday.
  • Sprout Social: Monday to Thursday, with Tuesday and Wednesday strongest across all its networks.
  • Hootsuite: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
  • SocialPilot: Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday close behind.
  • Later: Monday, for posts published between midnight and 6 a.m.

The weak end is clearer. Buffer calls Friday and Saturday the weakest days, Sprout lists weekends as worst, and SocialPilot and Later name Saturday as the lowest.

What is the best time to post on Instagram on Saturday?

Saturday is among the weakest days in four of the five studies, and no two of them pick the same hour. Here is each study's Saturday answer:

  • Buffer: 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. or 8 p.m., on a day it rates among the two weakest.
  • Hootsuite: 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m.
  • SocialPilot: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., if you post at all, on what it calls the lowest-engagement day.
  • Later: 5 a.m., on what it calls the worst day of the week.
  • Sprout Social: no Saturday hour for Instagram, only weekends listed as worst. Its all-network FAQ says Saturday engagement spikes 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. while activity drops overall.

SocialPilot adds that at the level of individual businesses, apparel, beauty, restaurants and hospitality did better on weekends. If your followers shop, eat out or plan weekends around your posts, Saturday is worth testing against your own numbers.

What is the best time to post Reels on Instagram?

The studies that looked at Reels on their own disagree: SocialPilot says 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and Later says 12 a.m. with Monday best. SocialPilot analysed 250,000 Reels and Later more than 975,000, and neither gives the period for that Reels sample.

Buffer did not split by format. Its page says it looked at all post types together, so its evening slots, 6 to 11 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, are not Reels-only. Sprout Social names Reels and carousels in its general Tuesday and Wednesday blocks.

With answers that far apart, a test on your own account will tell you more than a seventh study would. If you want an early read on a Reel's idea instead of its hour, trial reels show it to people who do not follow you first.

How do I find the best time for my own account?

Open your Insights and look at when your followers are most active, because that is Instagram's own answer. Instagram's Creators FAQ answers "What's the best time to post?" with "When your audience is awake and most active," and tells you to use your insights to understand their habits.

Instagram's Help Center describes where to look:

  1. Use a public account. A professional account taps Professional dashboard, then Insights below For professionals. A personal account taps Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
  2. Open Total followers, which needs at least 100 followers.
  3. Read Times they're most active on Instagram, which sits beside follower growth, top locations and age range.

When you schedule a post, the scheduler can suggest times as well. Meta's help article says Follower active times use your followers' activity over the last 28 days in your current time zone, and Meta Business Suite's Active times use the past 7 days. The steps are in can you schedule Instagram posts.

Then test:

  1. Pick two or three windows from the table above and from your own Instagram Insights.
  2. Post similar content in each window for a few weeks, and change nothing else.
  3. Compare Views and Interactions on each post's insights. To compare posts on equal terms, work out each engagement rate with the same engagement rate calculator.

Does Instagram say when to post?

Instagram names no hour, only the principle that your audience should be awake and active. Its ranking explainer, written by Adam Mosseri on 31 May 2023, lists "when a post was shared" as one of thousands of signals, next to things like whether you are on a phone or the web.

The four groups it names as the most important for Feed, roughly in order, are your activity, information about the post, information about the person who posted, and your history with that person. Timing sits inside the second group, beside how popular the post is and how quickly people respond. Our write-up of what Instagram says about its algorithm goes through the rest.

Where this stops working

  • None of the five studies is Instagram's data. Each describes accounts that use that company's tools.
  • Time zones are handled differently. Buffer, Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Later say their times are local to the audience. SocialPilot calls its times timezone-agnostic and does not explain how. If your followers span several time zones, no single hour fits them all.
  • Active is not the same as engaged, as Buffer notes about its own numbers.
  • Some data is old. Later's data is from 2024, and Hootsuite does not state its period.
  • We ran no timing study and saw no raw data. Each figure is only as reliable as the study that published it.

Pick a window, post, and let the comments that arrive at hours you are not watching get their DM anyway: inDM replies on its own, inside the 7 days Instagram allows for a private reply.
