People watching a story do not see your story replies on Instagram. Instagram describes a reply as a DM to the account that posted the story. Story comments are the public option: Instagram's Help Center says anyone who can see a story can also see its comments.
Everything below about Instagram comes from its Help Center, blog or Meta's Transparency Center, read on 23 October 2026, with each source's date where it has one. The menu paths are the ones the Help Center gives for the iPhone and Android apps.
Who can see story replies on Instagram?
The account that posted the story, and you. Instagram's Stories page says you can reply to a story with a DM, and its Help Center says that by default anyone who can see a story can reply to it directly with a message. It lands in the account's inbox like any other message, which is why our glossary treats a story reply as a DM.
Three other parties can matter:
- Other people watching the story. No. Instagram says anyone who can see a story can see its comments, and says nothing like that about replies.
- A tool the account has connected. If the account uses story reply automation, the tool reads a reply so it can answer.
- Instagram. Meta's Stories page, updated 18 September 2025, lists how often you reply to an account's stories among the signals, where privacy law permits, behind the order of your Stories tray. Instagram's ranking explainer of 31 May 2023 counts sending a DM as engagement history in the same way.
Are Instagram story replies private?
Story replies are private from other viewers, though not from the account that receives them. The two boxes under a story behave differently:
| Story reply | Story comment | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | A DM to the account that posted | The story itself |
| Who sees it | The account that posted and the person who replied | Anyone who can see the story |
| Who can send one | Anyone who can see the story, by default | By default, accounts the owner follows (public) or followers the owner follows back (private) |
| After 24 hours | The story image drops out of the chat. Your text stays. | Visible to the owner in their archive, and to everyone if the story becomes a Highlight |
Who can comment on a story, and who can see the comments?
Anyone who can see a story can read its comments, and by default only some people can write one. On a public account, anyone the owner follows can comment. On a private account, only followers the owner follows back can. The owner can open comments to all followers, and comments are limited to 60 characters, emojis included.
Comments show while the story is viewed, they stay visible to the owner after the story expires if the owner opens it in their archive, and if the story is saved as a Highlight they stay visible to anyone who can view it.
Can you turn off story replies?
You can control who can reply, and Instagram says people you stop from replying do not see the reply option. In the app:
- Tap your profile picture to open your profile.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Story replies, then select who can reply to your stories.
By default, anyone who can see your story can reply. The Help Center article does not list the choices on that screen, so we cannot say from Instagram's pages whether one of them is nobody. Open it and check. The setting is not available on a computer. Instagram's Help Center also says you can hide your story from specific people, which is different from blocking them.
Comments are fully documented and have their own switch. To turn them off for every story, tap Add, then Story, tap Settings at the top right, tap Story, and below Commenting tap Allow comments, then Off. For one story, tap Options before you post and choose Turn off Commenting. After posting, open your story, tap Options in the bottom right and choose Turn off commenting.
What happens to story replies after 24 hours?
The conversation stays and the story does not. Instagram's Help Center says a story disappears from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours unless you add it as a Highlight. After that, the photo or video is no longer visible in conversations, and any text sent with a message stays. Stories are saved to the Stories Archive unless you turn it off.
So a reply that depends on the image, such as "yes, the blue one", reads differently once the image drops out. Replies are easiest to answer while the story is still up.
Who sees answers to a question sticker?
Only the account that posted, unless it chooses to share one. Instagram's guide to Stories, posted 2 July 2026, says the questions sticker lets people type a response that comes to you privately, and that you can share a response anonymously in a follow-up story. An Add Yours sticker works the other way: Instagram says responses chain together into a thread of stories anyone can join.
How do I find or delete the story replies I sent?
Open Your activity. Tap your profile picture, tap Menu, and below How you use Instagram tap Your activity. Below Interactions tap Sticker responses. Instagram's Help Center says you can view and delete replies to other people's stories there, and that you will not see the story you replied to unless the person saved it to their Highlights. To delete, tap Select, choose the replies, then tap Delete.
How many people replied to my story?
Story insights count them. Open your story, tap Activity, then tap Insights. Instagram's Help Center says Interactions includes replies, and that Accounts engaged is the unique accounts that replied, shared or tapped stickers. Insights for a story stay available for up to two years, even though the story itself expires. What each Instagram metric means defines both.
Where this stops working
- No single sentence. Instagram's pages do not say in one line that no other viewer can see a reply. The answer rests on Instagram calling a reply a DM and on how it describes comments.
- Reply options. We could not confirm from Instagram's pages which choices the Story replies screen offers.
- Message requests. Instagram's Help Center says messages from people you follow appear in your Chats list, and that other people's requests can go to a Message Requests folder. We found no page that says how a story reply from someone you do not follow is sorted.
- Deleting what you sent. Instagram's article does not say whether deleting a reply from Your activity also removes it from the other person's inbox.
- Other devices. We read the iPhone and Android steps. Instagram's Help Center says the reply setting is not available on a computer, and we did not check the sticker responses list there.
Replies arrive around the clock, and a reply opens a 24 hour window in which an account can message back. If yours pile up, inDM can answer a story reply with a DM you wrote, and the setup guide takes a few minutes. Whatever you choose, you now know which box is private and which one is not.
