A good engagement rate on Instagram is one that beats the typical rate worked out the same way, and the typical rate depends on the method. Two 2026 studies that divide by followers report 0.30% and 0.48% for brands. A study that divides by reach reports about 5.4%. Compare your number with one that uses your formula.
We read every study below on 13 October 2026. Instagram itself publishes no benchmark, so each figure belongs to the study named beside it, and none is an inDM measurement.
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
Engagement rate is interactions divided by an audience number, multiplied by 100, and the audience number is the part that changes. Three are in use: followers, reach and views.
Instagram's Help Center defines interactions as the actions people take on your content, such as likes, comments, saves and shares. In the pages we read, Insights shows that count and does not turn it into a rate. Here is an example, not real data. A post has 185 interactions: 120 likes, 15 comments, 30 saves and 20 shares. The account has 10,000 followers, and 4,000 viewers saw the post.
- By followers: 185 divided by 10,000 is 1.85%.
- By reach: 185 divided by 4,000 viewers is 4.6%.
Same post, two rates, both correct. Studies also differ in which interactions they count, so a rate is only comparable with another rate that uses the same recipe. Our engagement rate calculator works out the follower version, and the glossary entry on engagement rate defines the term.
What is the Instagram average engagement rate?
Five studies give five different Instagram averages, from 0.30% to about 5.4%, because each one measured something different. Here is what each counted.
| Study | Published | What it measured | Sample | Instagram figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quid (formerly Rival IQ), 2026 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report | 5 March 2026 | Median. Total interactions on a post divided by followers | 150 companies chosen at random in each of 18 industries, organic and paid posts | 0.30%, down from 0.36% |
| Socialinsider, 2026 benchmarks pages | 16 January and 20 February 2026 | Average per post. Likes plus comments divided by followers | 35 million Instagram posts from 447,613 pages in 2025 | 0.48% for 2025, 0.45% in the second quarter of 2026 |
| HypeAuditor, blog post on engagement rate | 11 April 2025, modified 11 April 2026 | Average. Likes plus comments divided by views, or by followers for accounts with few Reels | 76 million Instagram accounts, period not stated | 1.59% |
| Buffer, State of Social Media Engagement in 2026 | 5 March 2026 | Median. Engagements divided by reach, counting likes, comments, shares and, where available, saves | More than 52 million posts across 10 networks, from accounts that posted at least 10 times in a year | About 5.4% for 2025, down from about 7.3% in 2024 |
| Buffer, what is a good Instagram engagement rate | 2 September 2025 | Median. The page does not state its formula | More than 27 million posts from 273,000 accounts, period not stated | 4.3% |
The highest figure is about eighteen times the lowest. Four things explain most of the gap:
- The audience number. Dividing by followers, reach or views gives different results for the same posts.
- What counts as an interaction. Socialinsider counts likes and comments. Buffer's 2026 study adds shares, and saves where available. Quid counts any measurable interaction on a post, shares included.
- Average or median. An average is pulled up by a few viral posts, and a median is not.
- Who is in the sample. Quid picks companies at random, Socialinsider samples brand pages, and Buffer's accounts belong to people who use Buffer.
Even Buffer's two studies disagree, at 4.3% and about 5.4%. The later one divides by reach, and the earlier page states no formula.
What is the average engagement rate by followers?
Both studies that split by account size show rates falling as accounts grow, with one exception at the top of Buffer's data. This table reads down each column and should not be compared across.
| Followers | Buffer, all posts, September 2025 | Socialinsider, Reels from business pages, August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1K | 5.2% | Not reported |
| 1K to 5K | 4.6% | 0.80% |
| 5K to 10K | 4.1% | 0.65% |
| 10K to 50K | 3.7% | 0.55% |
| 50K to 100K | 3.6% | 0.45% |
| 100K to 1M | 3.5% (100K to 500K), 3.7% (500K to 1M) | 0.40% |
| 1M and above | 5% | Not reported |
Buffer's tier figures come from its study of more than 27 million posts, and its page states no formula or period. Socialinsider's come from its video study dated 21 August 2026, which covers 111,000 videos from business pages active between January and June 2026 and divides by followers.
HypeAuditor gives one rule of thumb for a creator with 10K followers: under 2% is low, 2% to 3% is good and above 3% is high. Its page works rates out by views, which is another reason not to set that rule beside the columns above.
Find your size, pick one column, and compare yourself only with the method that column uses.
What do Instagram engagement rate benchmarks say about formats?
Carousels came out on top in the two studies that split by format, and the order of the other two formats differs. This table reads down each column.
| Format | Socialinsider, 2025, likes and comments divided by followers | Buffer, 2025, engagements divided by reach |
|---|---|---|
| Carousels | 0.55% | 6.90% |
| Reels | 0.52% | 3.31% |
| Single images | 0.37% | 4.44% |
Socialinsider's figures come from its Instagram benchmarks page dated 20 February 2026, and Buffer's from its report of 5 March 2026. Buffer adds that Reels get 36% more reach than carousels, while carousels earn 12% more engagement. A lower rate on Reels therefore does not mean fewer people saw them. Our page on Instagram carousel posts covers how to build one.
What can move your engagement rate?
Replying to comments is one habit Buffer's 2026 data ties to higher Instagram engagement, though Buffer says it cannot prove that replying is the cause. Posts where the owner replied to comments showed an estimated lift of 21% on Instagram. Buffer's own caution is that popular posts attract more comments, and owners then reply to them.
Instagram for Creators names shares, comments and follows as the metrics worth paying attention to. Where each one appears in Insights is covered in Instagram metrics, defined from Instagram's own pages.
Where this stops working
- Instagram publishes no benchmark. The Help Center pages we read define interactions and accounts engaged but give no rate and no target.
- The samples are not all of Instagram. They are companies, brand pages, tool customers and accounts of unstated selection. A creator's account may sit differently.
- Dates are mixed. Socialinsider's main page is dated January 2026 yet carries figures through the second quarter of 2026. Buffer's follower table has no period.
- We left out two sets of numbers. HypeAuditor's tier chart is an image we could not read, and Quid's industry results are charts with no figures in the text.
- A benchmark shows where other accounts are. It says nothing about what your own audience will do.
Pick one formula, work out your recent posts with it, and you can read any figure on this page against your own. If a post draws comments that carry your keyword, inDM replies under each one and sends the commenter your link by DM.
