Good Instagram call to action examples ask for one thing and say what the person gets, like "Comment ROUTINE and the full routine lands in your DMs." Put the ask where people are already looking: the caption, text on a video, a story sticker or your bio. The lines below are our own writing, and none has been measured.
Every Instagram fact on this page was read from Instagram's own pages on 15 October 2026, and the sources are listed at the end. Square brackets are yours to fill in, and the capital-letter keywords are placeholders.
What makes an Instagram call to action work?
A call to action works when it asks for one action, names what the person gets, and sits where they are already looking. Three rules cover most of it:
- One action. "Save this and send it to a friend" is two asks. Pick the one that matches the post: a save for a checklist, a send for something funny, a comment for a question.
- A named payoff. "Comment for more info" leaves people guessing. "Comment PRICES and the full list lands in your DMs" says what happens next.
- Effort that matches trust. A tap is a small ask of a stranger and a purchase is a large one, so ask for the big step after someone has saved, replied or commented.
These rules are our advice, not Instagram's. What Instagram publishes is what its ranking watches. Its post "Instagram Ranking Explained", dated 31 May 2023, says Feed looks most closely at how likely someone is to spend a few seconds on a post, comment, like, share or tap the profile photo. For Reels it names resharing, watching to the end and liking, and for Stories tapping in and replying. A comment, a send or a reply lines up with those actions. The post does not say that asking for them raises the odds, so we do not claim it either.
Which Instagram CTA ideas fit each goal?
A question fits a comment, a keeper fits a save, a friend fits a send, and a named payoff fits a DM. Pick the goal first, then the line.
To start a conversation
- "Settle this for me: [option A] or [option B]? I will answer every comment today."
- "What is the one thing you would change about [topic]? I read every reply."
To earn a save
- "Save this for the day you start [project]."
- "Keep this checklist for your next [trip, launch or move]."
To get a send
- "Send this to the friend who keeps saying [the thing they say]."
- "Know someone planning [event]? Send them this."
To earn a follow
- "I post one [type of post] every [day]. Follow if that helps."
- "Part two is on [day]: [what it covers]. Follow so it finds you."
To send people to a link
- "The full [guide, menu or schedule] is on my website. Tap the link on my profile."
- "Tap the link sticker to read the whole post."
To sell or book
- "Comment SLOTS and the dates still open land in your DMs."
- "Comment PRICES and the full price list lands in your DMs."
- "[Product] is back in stock. Comment RESTOCK and the link lands in your DMs."
If a link earns you a commission, say so in the post. We would ask for a sale only after people have saved or replied to something of yours first.
To start a DM
- "Comment STARTER and the beginner checklist lands in your DMs."
- "Reply to this story with SUPPER and I will send tonight's recipe."
- "Send me the word ROUTINE and I will send back the full routine."
Every line with a capital-letter keyword needs an automation switched on before you post. The keyword section below covers how.
Which call to action for Instagram posts goes where?
Put the ask where the person is already acting: the caption for a post, the screen and your voice for a reel, a sticker for a story, and the last slide for a carousel. Instagram's pages add a few limits worth knowing:
| Where it goes | What fits there | What Instagram's pages say |
|---|---|---|
| Caption | One ask on its own line, after what the post gives | Instagram's reach tips (31 May 2023) say relevant keywords in a caption, bio and hashtags help Search find you |
| Reel | Say the ask aloud and show it as a few words on screen near the end | Instagram says it tries to make reels that are muted, have borders or are mostly text less visible (31 May 2023), so keep the text short |
| Carousel | The last slide, after the value | Your profile shows the first slide with a carousel icon, and people swipe to see the rest |
| Story | A sticker: Link, Questions, Poll, Countdown and Add Yours are all on Instagram's list | Instagram says not all stickers are available to everyone or in reels |
| Bio | One line with the next step | Up to 150 characters and up to 5 links |
| Note | One question | Up to 60 characters, visible for up to 24 hours, and replies start a conversation between you and that person |
A story is a natural place to ask for a reply, because the reply lands in your inbox as a message from someone who chose to answer. Our caption templates show how to word the post itself.
What is a good Instagram bio call to action?
A good Instagram bio call to action is one short line that says what to do next, written inside the 150 characters Instagram's Help Center gives a bio. Instagram also lets a profile hold up to 5 links, in an order you choose, and up to 3 pinned posts. Those two features give the line something to point at: the first link, or a pinned reel that carries your keyword offer.
- "Weekly recipes for busy cooks. New here? Comment SUPPER on my pinned reel for the starter menu."
- "Booking [month] shoots. Times and prices: tap the first link."
- "Free beginner checklist: comment STARTER on my pinned post."
Make the offer in the bio match the pinned post, or people who follow the line will find something different. Our guide to writing an Instagram bio covers the rest of the profile.
How do I write a keyword call to action that sends a DM?
Say what the person gets, then the word to comment, and switch the automation on before you post. With inDM, the steps are short:
- Name the offer inside the line. "Comment ROUTINE and the full routine lands in your DMs" beats "comment for info" because the person knows what arrives.
- Choose a word people can type from memory. In inDM, capital letters do not matter, and the automation fires when a word in the comment starts with your keyword, so ART fires on "artist" but not on "start". A keyword of one or two letters has to be the whole word. Our guide to choosing a keyword goes through how.
- Preview the message and set the automation live before the post goes out. inDM shows a live preview of the DM before anything sends, and setup takes a few minutes.
- Know what Instagram allows. Meta's documentation, updated 30 June 2026, says only one message can be sent to a commenter, within 7 days of the comment. inDM cannot message people who never contacted you.
If the offer should ask for a follow or an email first, inDM has a follow gate and an email gate, both on the Free plan.
Can a call to action count as engagement bait?
Instagram names engagement bait as content it tries not to recommend, and none of the pages we read rule on comment keyword offers either way. Instagram's creator FAQ lists clickbait, engagement bait and contest promotion among content people broadly tell Instagram they dislike, and it asks creators for authentic engagement that is not clickbait. The Help Center page on recommendations names coordinated comment networks meant to drive engagement artificially.
Our engagement bait entry draws the line we work to: a comment that brings the promised thing is a doorbell, and asking for interaction for its own sake is a toll. The line we draw is our reading, not an Instagram ruling.
Where this stops working
- None of these lines is measured. Instagram publishes no ranking of call to action wording, so your own saves, comments, sends and DMs are the only test.
- A keyword ask reaches only people who comment. inDM cannot message anyone who never contacted you, and the single reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment.
- None of the pages we read mention keyword offers. We found no ruling, so we make no claim about how Instagram treats them.
- Stickers vary. Instagram's sticker page adds that a feature there may be unavailable in Japan and in Europe, without saying which one.
Write one line for the goal of your next post, put it where people are looking, and when the line is a keyword, the DM goes out while you do something else.
