Instagram content formats today are feed photos, carousels of up to 20 photos and videos, reels, stories, Live, channels, notes and trial reels. Choose by the job: Instagram's creator FAQ calls reels the best way to reach new audiences and says feed posts and carousels help you engage the audience you have. Stories go to people who follow you.

Every limit below was read from Instagram's and Meta's own pages on 15 October 2026, and the sources are listed at the end. The advice on which format to pick is our reading of those pages. We have not measured how any format performs.

What are the Instagram content types you can post today?

You can post photos, carousels, reels, stories, Live, channels, notes and trial reels, and Instagram's own pages give each one limits worth knowing before you plan around it.

Format What it is Limits Instagram publishes
Photo One image in your feed A photo 320 to 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4
Carousel One post people swipe through Up to 20 photos and videos in a single shape. You can reorder or remove slides after sharing but not add new ones, and videos in a carousel are not reels
Reel A short video that can reach people who do not follow you Clips that add up to 20 minutes. Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences. Any shape from 1.91:1 to 9:16
Story A photo or video that disappears after 24 hours Disappears from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours unless you add it to a Highlight
Live A live video to your followers A public account with 1,000 followers or more. Afterwards you can share a replay or find it in your Live Archive
Channel Messages from you to people who join A public account with more than 1,000 followers, released slowly. Members can react and vote in polls but cannot send messages
Note A short text update at the top of your inbox and profile Up to 60 characters, visible for up to 24 hours, one at a time. Replies start a conversation between you and that person
Trial reel A reel shown to people who do not follow you first A public account with 200 followers if it is professional, or 1,000 if it is personal
Instants A photo taken in the app and sent to Close Friends or friends Opened once, within 24 hours. Meta announced Instants on 13 May 2026

Three Help Center addresses that used to cover posting a video now open the article on recording a reel, and we found no separate video post. We treat a video as a reel. For the photo and reel sizes in detail, see Instagram post size.

Which Instagram post format should you choose?

Choose by the job the post has to do. Instagram's own pages point to a different format for each:

  • To reach new people, make a reel. Instagram's creator FAQ calls reels the best way to reach new audiences, and its ranking post says most of what people see in Reels is from accounts they do not follow. Our guide to making reels covers the steps.
  • To keep the people who follow you, post photos and carousels. The FAQ says consistently sharing feed posts or carousels helps you engage your audience, which can boost distribution. Slides, limits and reordering are in our page on carousel posts.
  • To stay in daily touch, post stories. Instagram says the stories people see come from accounts they chose to follow, and that people tend to look for their closest friends in Stories.
  • To test an idea first, post a trial reel. A trial reel reaches people who do not follow you before your followers see it. Trial reels explains who qualifies.
  • To speak to your most engaged followers at once, start a channel. Channels and broadcast DMs are not the same thing.
  • To share a thought or a question, leave a note. A note holds up to 60 characters.

Reels vs carousels vs stories: which fits the goal?

Reels meet people who do not follow you, carousels and photos meet people in Feed, and stories meet the accounts someone chose to follow. Instagram's post "Instagram Ranking Explained", dated 31 May 2023, describes each surface separately:

Reels Feed (photos and carousels) Stories
Who sees it, in Instagram's words Most of what people see is from accounts they do not follow A mix of accounts people follow, recommended content and ads From accounts people chose to follow, plus ads
What Instagram says it predicts Resharing, watching all the way through, liking, visiting the audio page Spending a few seconds on a post, commenting, liking, sharing, tapping the profile photo Tapping into a story, replying, moving on to the next one
The job we would give it Reach Keep your followers engaged A daily touchpoint

The last row is our reading, not Instagram's. Instagram publishes no side-by-side comparison of reach or engagement across formats. Its creator FAQ says Feed ranking does not give reels preference over photos and instead predicts what type of media each person will find most valuable, and the ranking post adds that if someone prefers photos, Instagram shows more photos.

The lines between formats are also blurring. Instagram's Creators blog said on 21 January 2025 that photos and carousels with audio added may also appear in the Reels tab.

Can one idea use more than one format?

Yes, and the second format should show the idea differently, not repeat the file. A reel that explains three steps can become a carousel with one step per slide, then a story that asks which step people struggle with. Instagram's Help Center warns that a trial reel may get limited reach if it detects you shared the same content before, so build a new version instead of reposting the old one.

Keep the first line and the offer the same across formats, so that anyone who meets the idea twice recognizes it.

How does a keyword fit each format?

A comment keyword works on a post or a reel, and a story reply keyword works on stories. With inDM, someone comments your keyword on a post or reel and inDM replies publicly and sends the DM, or someone replies to a story and the automation answers. Meta's documentation, updated 30 June 2026, says only one message can be sent to a commenter, within 7 days of the comment. inDM cannot message people who never contacted you. We have not covered Live, channels or notes here, so we make no claim about automating them.

Where this stops working

  • No format is proven better. Instagram publishes no comparison, and we left out third-party benchmarks because we could not trace them to Instagram.
  • Several formats are not open to everyone. Live needs 1,000 followers, channels are released slowly, trial reels need 200 or 1,000, and the reel article says some accounts may see reels but not record them.
  • Reel length is stated three ways. Instagram's Help Center says you can record or edit up to 20 minutes, and Instagram's reels page says multi-clip videos up to 3 minutes. The creator FAQ says it recommends videos of 3 minutes or less to people who do not follow you.
  • We found no length for a story clip or a Live. The pages we read give none.
  • The ranking post is more than three years old. Instagram dated it 31 May 2023.
  • We did not post in a live account. Limits change without notice, so check the app before you plan around one.

Pick one job for your next post, match it to the format in the table, and add a keyword to anything that hands out a link.
