To follow up on Instagram DMs, send one short message while the 24-hour window after their last message is open, or write it yourself in the Instagram app once it has closed. Automatic follow-ups only go out while that window is open, so a coach's reply to a lead who went quiet for a week is a manual message.
A lead decides on their own schedule, and Instagram keeps its own clock. This page sorts follow-ups by that clock, then covers what to write, when to send a booking link and how to keep track of who is waiting. It also says where automation stops. The sources are listed at the end, with the date we read each one.
How long can you follow up on an Instagram DM?
An automation can reply for 24 hours after the person's last message, and you can reply by hand after that.
Meta's Instagram Platform overview (updated 28 September 2026) says an app can use the official connection to respond during the standard messaging window, which lasts 24 hours for most actions. The clock restarts when the person writes again. The same page names two longer cases:
- A first message after a Click-to-Direct ad may open a window of up to 7 days from that message.
- A human agent window of 7 days exists for a person who needs more time. Meta describes its allowed use as human agent support where an issue can't be settled in the standard window, for example when the business is closed for the weekend. The wording is about a human responding, so it is not a way to schedule automatic messages days ahead.
A comment is a different case. Meta's private reply documentation (updated 30 June 2026) allows one message to a commenter, within 7 days of the comment, and says a follow-up can only be sent if the person replies, within 24 hours of that reply. The 24-hour messaging window page covers which actions open the clock.
Replies you type yourself in the Instagram app are a separate matter. The 24-hour rule is written for apps: Meta's messaging page describes it as the time your app has to send a message. The Help Center pages we read on sending messages describe no countdown for the Instagram app itself. They do say that a message to someone who doesn't follow you arrives as a message request that can only contain text, so a first message to a non-follower is limited to text until they accept.
What should an Instagram DM follow up message say?
Say what they told you, ask one question, and offer one next step.
A follow-up that could go to anyone reads as a template, and people who have had a real exchange with you notice. Quote their goal in their words, ask one thing, and leave a clean way out. Keep it to three sentences.
Three samples, one for each clock:
Same day, inside the window. The lead answered your question about their goal, then went quiet.
Hi [name], I kept thinking about what you said, that you want the next role to be one you stay in. That is the problem the first sessions are built around. Want me to send you the two times I have open this week?
A few days later, written by you. The window has closed, and you are writing in the app.
Hi [name], it's [your name] from last week. No pressure at all. Did the interview you mentioned go ahead? Happy to talk it through either way.
After a missed call, written by you.
Hi [name], we missed each other today, and that's fine. You booked because [what they told you], and I'd still like to help with that. Would another time this week suit you, or is now the wrong moment? Either answer is fine.
Don't negotiate in an automated message. Anything about price exceptions, payment plans or guarantees is a conversation you have yourself.
When should a discovery call link go in an Instagram DM?
Send the discovery call link after the person has told you what they want and roughly when, not on the first reply.
Links are allowed in messages. Meta's messaging documentation (updated 28 September 2026) lists links among the things a message can contain. The question is timing. A link sent on the first reply fills the calendar with people who haven't said what they want, and the call becomes the conversation the DM could have had. Two answers are enough: what they want to change, and when they want it changed.
Then frame the link around what they said:
That helps, thank you. Here is my calendar for a [length]-minute call: [link]. If none of the times work, tell me what does.
Once someone books, label the chat. Instagram's Help Center (read 15 October 2026) describes chat labels named Lead, Booked, Ordered, Paid and Shipped for business accounts and for creator accounts in certain categories, and warns that the feature may not be available to you yet.
How do you keep track of who needs a follow-up?
Use one place that shows who last wrote and when, and check it at the same time each day.
Instagram gives you two tools for this in the app. Labels mark where a lead stands, where your account has them. Scheduled messages let you write a reply now and send it later: the Help Center says you can schedule a text-only message from the phone apps: type it, tap and hold next to the message, then choose the date and time. The time zone follows your device, and only you can see the message until it sends.
Outside Instagram, a spreadsheet works: one row per lead, the date they last wrote and the date you plan to follow up. Write the lead's goal in it, so you can quote their words before the call. Collect emails from Instagram explains how to ask for an address in the same conversation, which matters because email is the one follow-up channel that Instagram's windows don't govern.
How does an automatic follow-up message work?
An automatic follow-up is a second message the automation sends a set time after the first, while the window is still open.
In inDM, the follow-up message is a Growth feature. It goes out 30 minutes to 20 hours after the first message, which stays inside the 24-hour window on purpose. That is a wait after the first message, not a clock time: inDM can't schedule a DM for a set time. Growth is $4.99 for the first month, then $14.99 a month. The follow-up DM use case shows what it looks like, and set up a follow-up DM takes you through the steps. The coaches and educators page shows where it fits a coaching funnel.
The Free plan includes the email gate and the follow gate, which ask for an email address or a follow before the link goes out, plus a contacts list you can export as a CSV file. For coaches, the email gate is the more useful one: an address collected in week one is a way to reach someone in week six.
Where this stops working
- No automatic DM after the window. An automation can't message someone once their window has closed. After that, the options are a message you write, a new comment or message from the lead, or email.
- No cold follow-ups. Meta's documentation says an app can message a person only after that person has sent a message. A lead who commented gets one private reply to that comment, and nothing more unless they answer it.
- We could not verify which tools offer the Human Agent window. Meta lists it among the features an app requests, so ask a tool's maker whether it supports a person replying inside it before you plan around it.
- Instagram's recurring messages are not open to everyone. The Help Center describes a way for people to opt in to regular messages from a business, and marks it "This feature isn't available to everyone." We could not verify whether your account can use it.
- Scheduling a message is manual. Instagram's own app can schedule a message for a time you pick, but only text, and only one you type yourself.
- Nothing here measures results. We have no figures on how many follow-ups become booked calls, and we quote none.
After a quiet week, you know which clock you are on, what can go out on its own, and what you need to write yourself.
