Instagram links not working on Android usually trace back to one of five causes: the message is still a message request, the in-app browser has stalled, the app or phone is out of date, the link is not a valid web address, or a safety warning is in the way. Each is checked from your phone in minutes.
Instagram's Help Center describes no Android-only fault with links in messages, so this page sticks to the causes that Instagram and Meta document. Every fact about Instagram below comes from Instagram's Help Center or Meta's developer documentation, read on 23 October 2026, and each source is listed at the end.
Why is an Instagram DM link not opening?
A link in an Instagram DM that will not open has five causes to rule out: where the message sits, a safety warning, how Instagram opens links, the state of the app and phone, and the link itself.
Three quick tests tell you which one it is. They are our suggestion, not an Instagram procedure.
- Try a second phone. Open the same chat on another Android phone and on an iPhone. If the link fails everywhere, the link or the page behind it is the problem. If it fails on one phone only, start with that phone's app.
- Paste the link into Chrome. If the page will not load there either, the page is down and Instagram is not involved.
- Open the chat on instagram.com in a mobile browser. Instagram's troubleshooting page says you can always use instagram.com from a mobile browser, so a link that opens there points at the Instagram app on that phone.
Why are links in Instagram DMs not clickable?
The first thing to check is whether the message arrived as a message request. Meta's documentation for private replies says a reply lands in a person's Inbox if they follow the account that sent it, and in the Requests folder if they do not (Instagram Platform, Private Replies, updated 30 June 2026). Instagram's Help Center says a request can hold text only, and that photos, videos and voice notes wait until the person accepts. It does not say what a request does to a link, so we cannot promise that links are blocked there. Accepting the request is the quick test.
Instagram's page on managing message requests says a request has to be accepted from the Message requests folder before it moves to your Chats list, while messages from people you follow arrive in Chats directly. If you cannot find the folder, see why message requests go missing, and for what the term means, DM request.
The second cause is the link itself. Meta's documentation for sending messages says links must be valid formatted URLs (Instagram Platform, Send Messages, updated 28 September 2026). An address that is missing its https:// start, contains a space or is cut off by a typo is not a valid link, so copy the exact address from the chat and check it character by character.
The third cause is a safety warning. Instagram's page on safe website browsing says the feature warns you when you tap a suspicious link in an end-to-end encrypted chat, and that messages without end-to-end encryption are scanned for unsafe links automatically. The page does not say what the scan blocks. A link that shows a warning is a reason to check where it leads before you open it.
How does the Instagram in-app browser work on Android?
By default, Instagram opens a link you tap in a post, ad, story or message inside its own in-app browser, not in your phone's browser. That is how Instagram's page on in-app browsing describes it. Meta's documentation for link buttons agrees: a URL button opens a web page in the in-app browser (Instagram Platform, Button Template, updated 30 June 2026).
Two controls in that window are worth knowing:
- Open in external browser. Open the menu in the top right of the in-app browser. Instagram's articles call it More in one place and Options in another. Choosing Open in external browser shows the page in your device's default browser instead.
- Browser settings. From the same menu, choose Browser settings, tap Clear cookies and cache in the top right, then tap Clear browsing data to confirm. Instagram says this clears cookies, cache and storage data from the sites you visited through Instagram.
Browser settings also holds the Safe website browsing switch. Instagram recommends keeping it on, and says that with it off Instagram cannot warn you when a site may be trying to steal your information.
If a page stalls or shows blank in the in-app browser and opens normally in Chrome, those two controls are what Instagram gives you. We found no setting that switches the in-app browser off for good in the Help Center pages we read.
Does an out-of-date app or phone break links?
Instagram says to run the latest version of the app and of your phone's operating system before trying anything else, and that since May 2022 some older versions of the app are no longer supported. Its pages cover these steps, which we have put in order from quickest to biggest:
- Restart the phone. Instagram says to try this first.
- Test on Wi-Fi and on mobile data. Instagram suggests this to rule out a weak connection.
- Update the app to the latest version from the Google Play Store.
- Clear Instagram's cache. Instagram's Android settings article says to open your phone's Settings, tap Apps, then tap Instagram, where you can clear cache and data. Try the cache first, because clearing data is the bigger step.
- Uninstall and reinstall Instagram. On Android, Instagram's steps are Settings, Apps, Instagram, Uninstall, then reinstall from Google Play and log in again.
Instagram also notes that a feature can behave differently when it has not reached everyone yet. If nothing here works, report the problem: shake your phone and tap Report a problem, or open your profile, tap Menu, then Help, then Report a problem. Instagram says the phone model, what you were doing and a screenshot all help it investigate.
What can you change when you send links to other people?
Four habits cover the causes above, and each rests on something Instagram or Meta documents:
- Check the address. Start every link with https:// and open it from the message itself on an Android phone before you share it widely.
- Say how to open it. Add a line such as: if the page stalls, tap the menu in the top right and choose Open in external browser. That is Instagram's own label.
- Expect a request. People who do not follow you may see your message as a request, so add a line asking them to accept it if they see one.
- Keep a second route. Instagram's Help Center says you can add up to five websites to your profile, so a profile link is a fallback when a message link will not open.
If you send links with an automation such as comment-to-DM, inDM's live preview shows the exact message before anything sends, which is the place to catch a mistyped address. Then comment from a second account on an Android phone to see what your audience sees. Meta lets one message carry up to three link buttons (Button Template, updated 30 June 2026), and how many links to put in one DM covers the choice.
Where this stops working
- No Instagram page names an Android-only link fault. Many guides say Android shows links as plain text and that a blank line before the address, a shortened link or a second message fixes it. We found no Instagram or Meta source for any of that, so we left it out.
- Instagram does not say what a message request does to a link. It says only that requests hold text.
- We tested no phones. Android versions and app builds vary, so a fix that works on one phone may not work on another.
- A tool cannot change how the app draws a link. An automation can send a valid link. How Instagram shows it on a given phone is Instagram's decision.
- Instagram changes its pages. The dates above are when we read them.
Work through the causes in order and within a few minutes you will know whether the fault is the message, the browser, the phone or the link.
