Instagram Instants are photos you take live in the app and send to your Close Friends or to followers you follow back. Each Instant can be opened once, and it can't be opened after 24 hours. Instagram says friends can't screenshot or record them, and the photo itself can't be edited.
What are Instants on Instagram?
Instants are Instagram's way to share an unedited photo in the moment with a small, chosen group. Meta launched them on 13 May 2026 as a feature inside Instagram, and shared Instants show up as a small pile of photos in your friends' inboxes (Meta newsroom, read 12 October 2026).
You take the photo with Instagram's own camera. Gallery uploads aren't allowed, and a caption is the only thing you can add. A separate Instants app, which opens straight to the camera and needs an Instagram login, is rolling out in select countries on iOS and Android. An Instant sent from either place reaches friends in both.
How do I send an Instant?
You send an Instant from the Instants stack in your inbox. These steps come from Instagram's Help Center (share photos instantly with others in your inbox, read 12 October 2026).
- Tap Messages, then tap Instants on the right.
- Tap Add a caption if you want one. The caption comes before the photo, because an Instant can't be edited afterwards.
- Choose your audience at the bottom: Close Friends or Friends, then tap a list. Friends here means followers you follow back, which Meta's launch post calls mutuals.
- Tap the camera button. The photo is shared straight away.
- Tap Undo, below the camera button, if you shared by accident. Undo works before a friend sees the Instant.
Friends can react, reply, or send an Instant back. A text reply arrives as an ordinary message between you and that person, and a reaction sends you a notification.
Who can see an Instant?
Only the people you choose can see an Instant: your Close Friends list, or your friends, meaning followers you follow back. Instagram's Help Center says friends can see a preview of the photo before they open it, and that information on who opened an Instant isn't available to you.
Instagram's usual controls apply. Block, Mute and Restrict work on Instants, and you can report an Instant that breaks Meta's Community Standards by pressing and holding the person's username, then tapping Report.
For teens, Instants sits inside Teen Accounts and Family Center with no extra setup. Time spent on Instants counts toward a teen's daily Instagram limit, Sleep Mode mutes notifications and restricts access by default from 10 PM to 7 AM, and parents of supervised teens are told the first time their teen downloads the Instants app.
How long do Instants last on Instagram?
An Instant is gone once a friend has opened it, and it can't be opened after 24 hours whether or not anyone looked. Each friend can view it once. After that, that account can't view it again on Instants or on Instagram.
Your own copy lasts longer. Instants you send go to a private archive that only you can see, and Instagram's Help Center describes it as covering the past year. Open it with the Archive button at the top right of the Instants screen. From the archive you can:
- Delete an Instant, which unshares it from any friend who hasn't opened it yet.
- Save a photo, from the More menu on the photo.
- Create a recap, which compiles archived Instants into a Story that all your followers can see.
In the standalone Instants app, your Instants are also saved to your phone's camera roll by default. To switch that off, tap your profile photo, tap Settings, tap Save to photos, then turn off Save instants to photos (About Instants by Instagram, read 12 October 2026).
Can you screenshot Instagram Instants?
No. Meta says friends can't screenshot or record the Instants you share. That is a block inside the app, and it isn't a promise about every device: Instagram's Help Center says plainly that someone can still photograph an Instant with a camera or another device before it goes away. Send Instants only to people you trust.
Your own copies are the other place a photo can stay. The archive keeps your sent Instants for up to a year, and the standalone app saves them to your camera roll unless you turn that off.
How do I turn off or hide Instants?
You can hide the Instants stack for now, and Instagram's own pages describe no permanent off switch. Press and hold the Instants stack in your inbox and swipe right to hide it. To bring it back, press and hold in the bottom right of the inbox and swipe left. Meta's launch post calls this snoozing: it stops Instants arriving until you bring them back.
To limit one person, use Block, Mute or Restrict. Some guides describe a settings toggle that hides Instants completely. Instagram's Help Center and launch posts don't mention one, so we leave it out rather than guess at the path.
What do Instants mean for creators and businesses?
Instants are for closeness, not reach. They go only to Close Friends or followers you follow back, they can't be posted publicly, and Instagram doesn't show you who opened them. A Close Friends list you have already built is the natural audience for an unpolished look behind the scenes.
The one public route is the recap. Create a recap from your archive and Instagram posts it to your Stories for all your followers, so you choose which private moments become public.
inDM does not send or read Instants. A recap is a Story, though, and replies to your Stories are what inDM's story reply automation answers. We haven't tested one on a recap, so try it on a small one first. Recaps and Close Friends are two of the tools on creator accounts, and where the rest of them live is in Instagram creator tools and controls.
Where this stops working
- Where things sit differs between Instagram's pages. Meta's launch post puts the Instants stack at the bottom right of your inbox, while the Help Center says to tap Messages, then Instants on the right. Your app version may differ from both.
- Instants can't be edited, so they have no filters. Instagram says photos taken with Instants can't be edited. For the filters on photos and videos you post, see Instagram filters.
- Privacy still applies. The Help Center says that by using Instants you acknowledge Instagram may use them for things such as personalizing suggestions and ads, under Meta's Privacy Policy.
- A screenshot block is not a seal. Another camera can still capture the screen.
- We read the pages and did not test the feature. Everything here comes from Instagram's and Meta's own pages, read on 12 October 2026. Instagram changes features without notice, so check your app before you rely on a detail.
Now you know who sees an Instant, when it disappears and how to hide the stack, so you can use it with people you trust or leave it snoozed.
