Trending hashtags on Instagram are tags that many people start using at the same time, and Instagram publishes no list of them that we could find. To see what is rising, search your topic in the app, open the hashtag pages and note which tags keep appearing. Instagram's Help Center allows up to 5 hashtags on a post.
Every Instagram page quoted below was read on 14 October 2026. We have no live trend data, so this page prints no list of tags.
Is there an official list of Instagram trending hashtags today?
No list that we could find. On 14 October 2026 we searched Instagram's Help Center for the word trending. The top result was a page about trending reels in Edits, Instagram's separate video app, and none of the results listed trending hashtags.
Instagram for Creators has an undated Get Inspired page with a section on trends. It names two things to follow: trending audio, described as the top 50 tracks on Instagram, and trending templates in the Reels camera. It names no list of hashtags.
Instagram does track trends. Its creator FAQ says it detects them using factors such as audio and hashtags, and weighs their popularity on Reels. Tracking a trend is not publishing a list of it, and we found no page that does.
Meta's developer documentation points the same way. Its reference page for a hashtag, updated 12 August 2026, lists two facts about a tag: its ID and its name. Approved apps can also read the most popular and most recent public posts that use it, and the page lists no count of posts and no measure of growth.
Where do the trending lists on other websites come from?
We cannot tell, because we found no Instagram page that publishes a list for them to copy. Treat any list as that website's own estimate until it says how it was made.
Instagram's Help Center also says posts in Explore are chosen from the accounts you follow, the photos and videos you have liked and your connections. What Instagram shows one person differs from what it shows another, so a single list for everyone leaves something out.
Four questions test any list:
- Which country and language is it for?
- Which dates does it cover?
- What was counted: posts, views or searches?
- Where did the numbers come from?
A list that cannot answer all four gives you a guess, however recent it looks.
How do you find trending hashtags on Instagram?
Use the screens Instagram already gives you, and read what they show for your own topic. Six places, each tied to a page we read:
- Search. Instagram's Help Center says search finds photos and videos, hashtags, accounts, audio, tags and places. Type a word your audience uses and read the hashtags it suggests. Adam Mosseri's explainer of 25 August 2021 says results are ranked by your text first, then your activity, then popularity signals such as clicks, likes, shares and follows.
- Hashtag pages. Tap a hashtag on a post or in search. The Help Center says the page shows public photos and videos that used it. Scroll a few and note the tags that recent posts from accounts like yours share.
- Explore. The Help Center describes it as recommendations from accounts you do not follow. Scroll with your topic in mind and read the captions.
- The Reels tab. Instagram for Creators says its suggested reels help you stay in the loop on what is gaining traction.
- Inspiration. On a professional account, tap Inspiration in the Professional Dashboard menu. Instagram's post of 30 May 2024 says it shows reels popular with your audience and lets you bookmark trending songs and audio clips.
- Edits. In Instagram's Edits app, a trending view shows reels from public accounts, with how many times each was viewed, liked and shared.
Search and Explore both lean on your own activity, according to Instagram, so they show what is rising near your interests.
A ten-minute weekly check. This routine is our suggestion, not an Instagram feature, and we have not measured it.
- Pick two or three words your audience uses for your topic.
- Search each one and open the hashtag pages that match.
- Note the tags that appear on several recent posts from different accounts.
- Keep only the tags that describe your own post.
- Write the date beside each, and look again next week.
To learn whether a tag set changed anything, change one thing at a time, as how to test Instagram reels explains, and judge it by reach.
How many hashtags can you use, and where do they go?
Up to 5 on a post. Instagram's Help Center page Use hashtags on Instagram says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that if you include more than 5 on a single photo or video, your comment won't post. Count before you tap Share.
Meta's developer page for publishing media, updated 28 September 2026, lists a different figure for posts that outside tools publish through Meta's connection: 30 hashtags in a caption. Instagram's own page is the one we follow for posting in the app.
Put the tags in the caption. The Help Center says you can add hashtags to a caption or to comments, while the search explainer says that for a post to be found in Search, keywords and hashtags belong in the caption and not the comments. On a public account, a post with hashtags appears on the matching hashtag page. The Help Center says posts from private accounts do not appear there publicly.
Some tags return nothing. The Help Center says a hashtag can become unsearchable when its text or content consistently breaks Instagram's Terms of Use or Community Standards, and that Instagram reviews these periodically.
Do hashtags still work on Instagram?
Instagram's pages say relevant hashtags can help, and none of them says by how much. The creator FAQ says trending hashtags that are relevant to the topics in your reel can help you reach more people who are interested in those topics. It also warns against showing irrelevant hashtags, because engagement and distribution may suffer when your content reaches people who are not interested in it. That page carries no date, and it speaks about reels.
The 2021 search explainer gives the older reason: Instagram matches what people type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places, so a hashtag in a caption is one more piece of text that can match. For what else Instagram has said about ranking, see Instagram algorithm 2026.
We cannot tell you how much reach a hashtag adds. Instagram gives no figure on the pages we read, and we have no data of our own, so this page states none.
How do you choose 5 hashtags for one post?
Choose each tag for a different job, and leave a slot empty when nothing fits. This method is ours and it is untested.
- The topic, in the words your audience would type.
- The specific subject of this post.
- The person it is for, such as a beginner or a new parent.
- The place, if the post is local.
- A current moment, only if the post truly belongs to it.
The creator FAQ warns that irrelevant tags can hurt, which is why an empty slot beats a filler. Our hashtag generator builds a set of five by how broad each tag is, and prints no post counts. For where tags sit in a caption, see Instagram caption templates.
Where this stops working
- We have no live trend data. This page cannot tell you what is rising today. Only the screens in your own app can.
- Instagram publishes no per-tag figure that we found. Meta's developer reference lists an ID and a name, and Instagram's pages give no count or growth rate.
- The creator FAQ is undated and speaks about reels. We cannot say how far its hashtag advice reaches into photos, carousels or stories.
- Your view is partly your own. Explore and Search lean on your activity, so two people can see different answers.
- Two limits exist. The Help Center says 5 for the app and Meta's developer page says 30 for tools. We found no page that explains the difference.
- We do not know how often Instagram refreshes its trend lists. The pages we read do not say.
Ten minutes in Instagram's own screens each week tells you what is rising in your topic, and when a stranger arrives through a tag and comments your keyword, inDM sends them the link you promised.
