A reel with a thousand comments is a thousand raised hands. Here's the playbook for answering all of them, the same one behind every "comment LINK" post on your feed. If you are still deciding whether the mechanic covers Reels at all, start with do Instagram DM automations work on Reels? and come back for the playbook.
1. Pick the post with proof of demand
Don't guess, look at what your audience already asks. The post whose comments repeat a question ("where's the link?", "what's the program?", "full list?") has already voted. Attach your first automation there, even if the post is weeks old; comment-to-DM automations work on old posts that keep circulating.
2. Choose a keyword people actually type
One word, natural to say, easy to spell, and not hiding inside a common word. That last test is the one people skip: a keyword is matched anywhere inside a comment, so a short one such as ART also fires on start, party and heart. Put it in the caption, say it on camera, pin it in a comment. The keyword is your call to action, treat it like copy, not configuration. The full method is in how to choose an Instagram DM keyword.
3. Write the pair: public reply + DM
The public reply keeps your comment section alive and signals the keyword works. The DM does the delivering. Three working pairs to adapt:
| Public reply | The DM |
|---|---|
| "Sent, check your DMs" | "Hey, so glad you're here. Here's the link I promised 👇" |
| "It's in your inbox ✨" | "Here's everything from that video, in one place. Tell me what you make with it." |
| "On its way!" | "Love that you asked. Here's the guide, and the one question everyone asks next is answered on page two." |
Write them in your voice. The DM should read like you on a good day, not like a system. (If you're on inDM, the live preview shows exactly how the exchange renders before it goes live.)
4. Add a gate only when it earns its keep
A follow gate turns viral reach into audience, one warm ask before the link. Email capture does the same for your list. Use one, not both, and only where the payoff justifies the extra step: gate your best lead magnet, not a casual link drop.
5. Read two numbers, then iterate
- Trigger rate: what share of commenters used the keyword. Low? The call to action isn't landing; move it earlier in the caption or say it on camera.
- DM click-through (on Growth): what share of DMs got a tap. Low? The DM copy or the offer needs work, not the automation.
Run the loop weekly: post, read the two numbers, adjust one thing. The creators who win with automation aren't the ones with the most automations, they're the ones who treat the DM as their best-performing piece of copy.
