How-to guide

Fix a comment you cannot edit

Can you edit a comment on Instagram? No. Instagram's Help Center describes no way to edit a comment, so you delete it and post a corrected one. You can edit a post's caption, and a direct message for 15 minutes, but a comment stays as written until you delete it.

The steps

Check what Instagram lets you edit

Instagram's Help Center describes no Edit option for comments. We read it on 13 October 2026: it has articles on deleting a comment, replying to one, hiding them and turning them off, and none on editing one. Its search assistant answered that Instagram does not currently have a feature to edit comments, and that you need to delete the comment and post a new one.

Three nearby things you can edit, so you know which problem you have:

  • A post's caption. You can add, change or delete the caption on a post you already shared.
  • A direct message. Instagram gives you up to 15 minutes to edit a message you sent, and each message can be edited up to 5 times.
  • A post on Threads. Threads is a separate app, and its Help Center says you can edit a post or reply there within 15 minutes of posting.

If the thing you want to fix is a comment, carry on to step two.

Tip: If the words you want to fix are in your own post caption, skip the rest of this guide and use step five.

Keep the words you want before you delete

Instagram's pages describe no way to restore a deleted comment, so keep the text first. They also describe no copy option for comments, so the reliable way is to type the corrected version in your notes app, then paste it into Instagram in step four.

Check what else you will need to redo. If your comment was a reply, Instagram says a reply works by mentioning the person, who gets a notification, so mention them again in the new one.

We found no Instagram statement about what happens to likes or replies on a comment you delete, so look at them before you decide.

Tip: If the comment has replies you care about, use step six instead and leave the original in place.

Delete the comment

On an iPhone or Android phone, tap Comments below the post, or tap any comment. Tap and hold the comment you want to delete, then tap Delete.

On a computer, hover your cursor over the comment, click Options, then click Delete.

Instagram's rules for who can delete what are short. On your own posts you can delete your comments and other people's. On someone else's post you can delete only the comments you wrote, and you can always delete those. If you delete a comment you wrote on a reel that was also shared to Facebook, it is removed from both apps.

Tip: If Instagram says the comment cannot be deleted, it may already be deleted and you are looking at an old version of the page. Refresh and check again.

Post the corrected comment

Go back to the post and add your corrected text as a new comment, then tap Post.

To answer someone, tap Reply below their comment, add your text and tap Post. The reply mentions them, and Instagram says they get a notification.

Include the whole corrected text rather than a fragment, because the old comment will be gone.

Tip: Check the corrected text once before you tap Post, because you cannot edit it afterwards.

Edit the caption or the message instead

If the mistake is in your own caption, you can edit it in place. In the app, tap Options above your photo or video, tap Edit, change the caption, then tap Done.

If the mistake is in a direct message, tap and hold the message you sent, tap Edit, update the text and tap Send. The message then shows Edited above it. You cannot edit a message that includes a mention or a command, though you can unsend it, and Instagram says others may already have read the original.

Neither route changes a comment. They only help when the words you wanted to fix were in a caption or a message.

Tip: A caption edit is a good way to add a correction for everyone, without touching a thread of replies.

Add a correction without deleting anything

You do not have to delete a comment to fix it. Tap Reply below your own comment and write the correction, such as the right date or the right link. People who read the thread see the original and the fix together, and any replies under the original stay put.

This works well when the comment has already started a conversation, or when the mistake is small enough that a short note settles it.

Tip: Keep the correction to one line. A long reply under your own comment draws more attention to the mistake.

Delete or hide many comments at once

To clear several comments from a post of your own, tap Comments below the post, tap Options in the top right, then tap Select multiple comments. Select the comments, then choose Hide comments, Delete comments or Block accounts at the bottom. Instagram says you can delete up to 25 comments at a time.

To clear comments you wrote on other people's posts, tap your profile picture, tap Menu in the top right, tap Your activity below How you use Instagram, then tap Comments below Interactions. Tap Select, choose the comments, tap Delete at the bottom and confirm. You can sort the list by date and filter it by account first.

If you would rather keep a comment on your own post but stop others from seeing it, our guide to how to hide comments on Instagram covers that route. If the comments you want gone are from spam accounts, see what an Instagram comment bot is and how to handle it.

Tip: Instagram lets you unhide a comment you hid. When in doubt, hide first.

Where this stops working

We found no edit feature and no announcement of one. The only statement is from the Help Center's search assistant, which Instagram says can make mistakes. Instagram can change this, so check the Help Center if the app shows an Edit option on your own comments.

We did not test this in the app. Every step comes from Instagram's Help Center, read on 13 October 2026. Menu names differ slightly between iPhone, Android and the computer, and the iPhone pages are the ones quoted here.

We found nothing on likes and replies. Instagram does not say what happens to them when you delete a comment, so we state nothing.

Followers cannot edit either. If you ask people to comment a keyword so an automation can send them a link, a mistyped keyword stays mistyped. inDM ignores capital letters and fires when any word in the comment starts with your keyword, so for a keyword of three or more letters a near miss such as an extra letter at the end still works. A keyword people can spell means fewer people need to delete and try again.

Tip: Say the keyword out loud in the post, then spell it in the caption, so people copy it right the first time.
What you end up with

A corrected comment on the post, with the old one deleted, and a clear sense of when to reply with a correction instead. You also know which things Instagram does let you edit: a caption, and a message for 15 minutes.

Good to know

Questions, answered plainly

How do I edit a comment on Instagram?

You cannot. Instagram's Help Center describes no way to edit a comment, so you delete it and post a new one. Tap and hold your comment on a phone, or hover and click Options on a computer, then choose Delete. Write the corrected version as a new comment. You can edit a post's caption, and a message you sent in the last 15 minutes.

Why can't I edit my Instagram comment?

Because Instagram does not offer the feature. Its Help Center has articles on deleting, replying to and hiding comments, and none on editing them, and its search assistant says Instagram does not currently have a way to edit comments. The 15 minute edit window applies to direct messages and to Threads posts, not to Instagram comments.

How do I delete a comment on Instagram?

On a phone, tap Comments below the post, tap and hold the comment, then tap Delete. On a computer, hover over the comment, click Options, then click Delete. On your own posts you can delete anyone's comments. On other people's posts you can delete only your own. Instagram says you can delete up to 25 comments at a time on your own posts.

Can I edit a comment I left on someone else's post?

No. Nobody can edit a comment on Instagram, including on posts they own. On someone else's post you can delete the comment you wrote and post a new one, and you can always delete your own comments. You cannot delete another person's comment on a post that is not yours.

What can I edit instead of a comment on Instagram?

You can edit the caption of a post you shared: tap Options above it, tap Edit, change the text and tap Done. You can edit a direct message you sent within 15 minutes, up to 5 times, unless it includes a mention or a command. Both are different from comments, which stay as written until you delete them.
