Bold and italic text for Instagram
Type once and copy bold, italic and bold italic letters, in serif and sans, for your bio, captions and comments. They are look-alike characters, not formatting, and this page says where that matters. Free, no login, nothing leaves your browser.
Type something above and six styles appear below, each with a Copy button.
These are look-alike characters, not formatting. Each styled letter is a separate Unicode character made for mathematics, so a screen reader may read it one letter at a time or by its Unicode name, and Instagram has not said how its search treats these characters. Use them for one line of emphasis. Keep anything people must read or search for in plain text.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type here is stored or sent anywhere.

This free bold text Instagram generator turns what you type into bold, italic and bold italic letters, in serif and sans styles, with a Copy button on each. The letters are look-alike Unicode characters, not real formatting, so screen readers may read them oddly and Instagram search may not match them to the plain words.
How do I bold text on Instagram?
Type your text above, press Copy beside the style you want and paste it into your caption, bio or comment. Instagram's Help Center describes no bold or italic option for captions or bios (searched for bold, italic, fonts and format text on 15 October 2026), so the usual route is to paste characters that look bold. Each styled letter is its own character, so there is no setting to switch on.
Hashtags, @mentions, links and email addresses stay plain by default, because a styled hashtag is a different string from the plain one. Untick the box above the results to style everything.
Which styles does this tool make?
Six: bold, italic and bold italic, each with a serif look and a sans look. Here is the word Hello in each.
- Bold, serif: ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ
- Italic, serif: ๐ป๐๐๐๐
- Bold italic, serif: ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐
- Bold, sans: ๐๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ผ
- Italic, sans: ๐๐ฆ๐ญ๐ญ๐ฐ
- Bold italic, sans: ๐๐๐ก๐ก๐ค
How each one looks depends on the font a device uses to draw it. Only the letters A to Z and the numbers 0 to 9 have styled versions. Accented letters, other alphabets, punctuation and emoji stay as you typed them.
How do I make Instagram italics?
Copy the Italic, serif or Italic, sans row and paste it where you want slanted text. Italics work the same way as bold, with two gaps that come from Unicode itself. Unicode has no italic numbers, so numbers stay plain in the italic styles, and the bold italic styles borrow the bold numbers. The italic small h is also borrowed. Its slot in the mathematical italic alphabet is empty, and the Unicode 17.0 code chart points to the Planck constant sign (U+210E) instead, which the chart describes as simply a mathematical italic h.
Can I use bold text in an Instagram bio?
Yes, for one line, if the words people search for stay in plain letters. A bio holds up to 150 characters, and you edit it from your profile: tap Edit profile, tap Bio, write, then tap Done (Instagram Help Center, read 15 October 2026). Paste the styled line in and check the counter before you save, because Instagram does not say how it counts these characters.
Instagram's explanation of its search, posted by Adam Mosseri on 25 August 2021, says it tries to match what a person types against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. The post does not mention styled characters, so whether a plain search finds a bio written in them is not something Instagram has documented. Keep the words a stranger would type, such as your trade and your city, in plain letters, and style the line after them: an offer, a date, a call to action. The bio guide covers what to put in those 150 characters.
What goes wrong with bold and italic characters?
Three things can: some people cannot read them, they can look different from one device to the next, and a search for the plain words may not find them.
The first matters most. The Unicode Standard says the characters in this block are intended for mathematical or technical notation, not for everyday text, and that they should not be used to style ordinary text. Each one has a mathematical name: the bold b is MATHEMATICAL BOLD SMALL B, and a screen reader that speaks Unicode names would say exactly that where a plain b is spoken as a letter. We did not test any screen reader for this page, so assume a styled sentence is hard to follow. To hear one on an iPhone, turn on VoiceOver under Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, the built-in screen reader Instagram's Help Center points to for mobile. Leave hashtags, your username and your name plain for the same reason: a person who types the plain word is not typing the styled letters.
How is this different from the fancy fonts generator?
The fancy fonts generator copies 13 styles, including script, Fraktur and upside down. This tool makes only the six bold and italic styles, keeps line breaks, and leaves hashtags, mentions and links plain unless you say otherwise. If you also want spacing between paragraphs in a caption, the line breaker handles that.
Where this stops working
- It is not formatting. Instagram describes no bold or italic option in its Help Center, so every result is pasted characters, and the Unicode Standard says they were not made for styling text.
- It may be hard to hear. We did not test screen readers, and they differ. Do not style anything a person must read, such as a price or a way to contact you.
- Search is unknown. Instagram has not documented how its search treats these characters, so do not rely on them for anything you want found.
- Only A to Z and 0 to 9 change, and we have not checked every screen. Accents, other alphabets, punctuation and emoji stay as typed. Look at the result in the app before you post, and on a second phone if you can.
If your caption asks for a keyword comment, keep the keyword itself in plain letters, so what people type is what you set. inDM's comment-to-DM automation replies when a word in a comment starts with your keyword, whatever the capital letters. Style one line, leave the rest plain, and your post keeps its meaning while one line catches the eye.
How to use it
Type or paste your text
Line breaks are kept. All six styles appear as you type, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
Decide what stays plain
The box above the results leaves hashtags, @mentions, links and email addresses as ordinary text. Untick it if you want every word styled.
Copy the style you want
Press Copy beside it, then paste into your bio, caption, comment or message. Check how it looks in the app before you post.
Keep it to one line
Style an offer, a date or a call to action, and leave the words people search for in plain letters. Screen readers may read styled letters oddly.

Where can I paste bold text on Instagram?
Anywhere Instagram lets you type: a caption, a bio, a comment or a message. The characters are text, so there is no setting to switch on. We have not tested every screen, so look at the result in the app before you post, and check your bio's counter before you save.
Is bold text on Instagram bad for accessibility?
It can be. The Unicode Standard says its mathematical alphabets are meant for mathematical or technical notation, not for ordinary text. A screen reader that reads characters by their Unicode names would say MATHEMATICAL BOLD SMALL B for a styled b. We did not test any screen reader, so keep anything essential in plain text and style at most one line.
Will bold text in my bio hurt Instagram search?
Nobody outside Instagram can say, because Instagram has not documented it. Its explanation of search, dated 25 August 2021, says it tries to match what a person types against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places, and it does not mention styled characters. Keep the words people would type in plain letters.
How is this different from the fancy fonts generator?
This tool makes the six bold and italic styles, keeps your line breaks, and leaves hashtags, mentions, links and email addresses plain. The fancy fonts generator at indm.social/tools/fancy-fonts-generator copies 13 styles, including script and upside down.
Does Instagram have a built-in bold button?
Not one that Instagram's Help Center describes for captions or bios. We searched it for bold, italic, fonts and format text on 15 October 2026. Instagram can add features at any time, so check the app before you paste.
