Check a username before you pick it

Test a name for length and characters, get variations that pass the same test, and open its instagram.com address to look for a profile. It cannot see whether a name is free, and it says so. Free, no login, nothing leaves your browser.

Type it without the @. You can also paste a profile link, and the tool reads the name from it.

Type a name above. The checks run as you type.

This tool never contacts Instagram, so it cannot see whether a name is free or taken. It tests the format, builds variations, and gives you the address to open yourself. Instagram makes the final check when you save a username.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type here is stored or sent anywhere.

This Instagram username checker tests a name you type for length, characters and period placement, suggests variations that pass the same tests, and builds an instagram.com link you can open to look for a profile. It cannot see whether a name is free. Only Instagram can say that, when you save the change.

How do I check if an Instagram name is taken?

Open instagram.com followed by the name, and a profile that loads means the name is taken. The tool builds that address and opens it in a new tab. If Instagram shows a "Profile isn't available" page instead, no profile is visible at that address. Read that as a hint, not proof: the page's own wording says the profile may have been removed (seen on instagram.com, logged out, 15 October 2026).

The sure test is Instagram's own. Open your profile, tap Edit profile, type the new username and tap Done. The Help Center says the username changes immediately if it is available (read 15 October 2026). That test changes your real username, and the Help Center says your followers may be notified. It also needs an account that already exists, so while you are still picking a name for a new account, the link is the check you have.

What does this username checker test?

It runs four tests and shows each result as Passed, Check or Fix. Fix means the name breaks a rule the tool applies. Check means Instagram may still accept the name, but it is worth a second look.

  1. Characters. Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Instagram's Help Center says you can add full stops, numbers and underscores to a name that is not already in use. It does not say whether anything else is allowed, so the tool flags every other character, spaces and accents included.
  2. Length. The tool's limit is 30 characters.
  3. Periods. A period at the start or end of a name, or two in a row, is marked Check, not Fix. The Help Center says nothing about where periods may go, and they are easy to mistype. A period at the end also reads as the end of a sentence when someone shares your name.
  4. Web addresses. Instagram's Terms of Use say you cannot use a domain name or URL in your username without its prior written consent (section 4.2). The tool marks names that end like a web address, such as .com.

Instagram's Help Center does not publish a maximum length, a full list of allowed characters or a rule for periods (searched 15 October 2026). The 30-character limit and the character list are this tool's settings, not Instagram's words. If Instagram's Username field disagrees, trust the field.

Is there an Instagram username generator?

This tool is one in a narrow sense: it builds variations of a name you give it and does not invent names from nothing. Type the name you want and, if you like, one word such as your trade. The tool lists up to 12 variations: the words joined or split with a period or underscore, your word added in front or behind, "the" in front, or a number on the end. They are the moves Instagram's Help Center suggests when a name is held by an inactive account: add full stops, numbers, underscores or abbreviations. Every variation passes the four tests above. None has been checked for availability, so open each one to look.

What makes an Instagram username worth keeping?

A good username is one a person can hear once and type correctly. Say it aloud to a friend, and if they ask whether it has an underscore or a period, pick one separator or drop both. Keep it close to the name your audience knows you by: Instagram's explanation of its search, posted by Adam Mosseri on 25 August 2021, advises a handle or profile name related to your content, and says search tries to match what a person types against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. Do not borrow another brand's name: Instagram's Terms of Use (section 5) say it may change a username that infringes someone's intellectual property or impersonates another user.

Your username is also the end of your profile address, so the DM link generator can build a message link from it. How to start an Instagram account covers the rest of setup.

Can I change my Instagram username later?

Yes, from Edit profile. The Help Center says your followers may be notified, and that if your account reaches a lot of people the change may be reviewed first (read 15 October 2026). Instagram does not hold your old name for you: in most cases you can change back to a name you used before, but only if nobody else has taken it.

Where this stops working

  • It cannot see Instagram. It never contacts Instagram, so it cannot tell a free name from a taken one, a removed profile, or a name Instagram refuses for another reason.
  • The format settings are the tool's own. Instagram has not published a length or a character list, so the limits may differ from what the Username field accepts.
  • It does not check trademarks or impersonation. Instagram can change a username it finds infringing or impersonating.
  • It knows nothing about your account. It does not log in or read your profile, and nothing you type is stored or sent.

When the name is settled, switch to a professional account and let comment-to-DM answer the comments on your first posts, which inDM does on its free plan. Until then, test the format here, open the link, and you will know within a minute whether the name is ready to try in Edit profile.

How to use it

Type the name you want

Type it without the @, or paste a profile link and the tool reads the name from it. The checks run as you type.

Read the four checks

Characters, length, periods and web address each show Passed, Check or Fix. Fix means change the name. Check means it may still work, so look again.

Open the address

Press Open on Instagram. A profile that loads means the name is taken. A not-available page is a hint and not proof that the name is free.

Try the variations

Add one word if you like, such as your trade. Open any variation with the link beside it, and copy the ones you want to keep.

Save the final check for Edit profile

Instagram makes the final check when you save a username. In Edit profile, type the new name and tap Done. That changes your real username, so do it only when you mean to.

Questions, answered plainly

Can I check IG name availability with this tool?

No. The tool never contacts Instagram, so it cannot see whether a name is free. It tests the format of the name, builds variations, and gives you the instagram.com address to open yourself. A profile that loads means the name is taken. Instagram's own check happens when you save a username in Edit profile.

How many characters can an Instagram username have?

Instagram's Help Center does not publish a number (searched 15 October 2026). This tool uses 30 as its limit. If Instagram's Username field stops you earlier or lets you go further, go by the field.

Can an Instagram username have periods and underscores?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center lists full stops, numbers and underscores as things you can add to make a name that is not already in use. It does not say whether a period may start a name, end it or appear twice in a row, so this tool marks those cases as worth checking.

Can I reserve an Instagram username?

No. Instagram's Help Center says usernames are provided on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be reserved (read 15 October 2026). If a name is held by an account that seems inactive, the Help Center's advice is to choose an available version by adding full stops, numbers, underscores or abbreviations.

Does this username checker need my Instagram login?

No. It needs no login or password and never contacts Instagram. The checks run in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent. The only visit to Instagram is the one you make when you press Open on Instagram, which opens instagram.com in a new tab.
