How much to charge for Instagram DM automation depends on whether you sell a setup, retainer or both. Public offers read on 12 October 2026 run from a few hundred dollars for a basic setup to $1,200 to $2,000 and up for custom builds, with monthly management of $199 to $449, and hourly figures of $20 to $75 between observed freelance bids and published rate guides.
Those figures come from the offers and rate guides we could open on one day, so they show where public prices sit, not where your fee should land. Below: what each source charges, three ways to shape a fee, what goes into the price, where the tool cost fits, and how to price when clients buy their own plan.
What do agencies and freelancers charge today?
The offers we opened on 12 October 2026 start at $299 for a one-off setup, run to $2,000 and up for a custom build, and charge from $199 a month for done-for-you management. Here is each one, with the price as the seller states it.
| Seller | What it covers | Price, read 12 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| DM AI Agency, Starter | A done-for-you AI chat agent service that covers Instagram | $199 a month plus $399 setup |
| DM AI Agency, Growth | The next tier of the same service | $449 a month plus $499 setup |
| Stellar Media Marketing (post dated 11 Oct 2026) | A basic automation chatbot build | From $1,200, and around $5,000 for larger builds |
| hackceleration.com, a ManyChat agency | A ManyChat build, scoped after an audit, with ManyChat billed separately | From $2,000 |
| Inrō Managed Account | A managed, done-for-you service | From €299 a month |
| A Contra freelancer listing | A ManyChat or Make.com comment, DM and story-reply setup in 3 days | Starting at $299 |
| A Freelancer.com buyer post | ManyChat-style automation work, with the buyer's budget and the bids it drew | A budget of $15 to $25 an hour, and bids averaging $20 an hour |
The DM AI Agency tiers pair a setup fee with a monthly fee. The Stellar, hackceleration.com and Contra prices are quoted for builds or setups, Inrō's is monthly only, and the Freelancer.com figures are hourly.
What do the published rate guides estimate?
Published guides put freelance DM automation work at $25 to $75 an hour, and they are their authors' estimates, not offers anyone has made.
- Biztoolkit (2026) estimates no-code chatbot work such as ManyChat at $25 to $60 an hour, $500 to $3,000 a project, and retainers of $300 to $2,000 a month.
- Contra's hiring guide puts ManyChat freelancers at $25 to $75 an hour.
What does a tool vendor suggest?
CreatorFlow, which sells a DM tool, suggests retainers of $99 to $299 a month per client and setup fees of $199 to $999 in its own agency playbook, read on 12 October 2026. It is a tool vendor's own suggestion, not an observed price, so treat it as one view.
Read together, setup prices in the offers run from $299 to $2,000 and up, monthly prices from $199 to $449, and hourly figures from $15 to $75 once the buyer's budget and the guides are counted. The spread is wide because the work behind the price varies, which the next three sections take in turn.
Setup fee, retainer, or both?
An agency can charge a one-off setup fee, a monthly retainer, or a setup fee plus a monthly fee, and the right shape depends on what the client receives each month after the build.
A one-off setup fee fits a launch or a single campaign. You plan the keywords, write the messages, connect the account, test it and hand it over. The client runs it afterwards, or does not need it to keep changing. The starting prices of $1,200 and $2,000 in the table are quoted for a build.
A monthly retainer fits when you write new keywords and messages every month. As new posts go out, someone plans the next keyword, writes the DM, tests it and sends a report. The client is buying continued work, so the fee repeats. Inrō's managed account is priced monthly.
A setup fee plus a monthly fee fits when the first build is a large piece of work and the months after are lighter. The setup covers the planning and the first automations, and the monthly fee covers upkeep and the report. DM AI Agency's two tiers are priced this way.
A quick test: if the client's next month needs a fresh keyword plan, charge monthly. If it does not, charge once. How agencies sell Instagram DM automation to clients lists what a done-for-you service includes, which is the list a fee has to cover.
What goes into the price?
Most of the price of a DM automation service is planning and writing, and the rest depends on how much of both there is. These are the parts to count before you set a number:
- The planning and the copy. The keyword plan, which keyword goes with which post, what each DM says and what the follower receives. This is what clients are buying, and it is the real work.
- How many automations and posts a month. One launch campaign is a different job from a keyword for every post.
- Languages. Everything you write sends exactly as written, in any language, so a client whose followers speak two languages may need two sets of copy. The follow ask and the email ask that inDM writes itself follow one language setting per workspace, and Growth and up lets you rewrite them in your own words.
- Follow or email gates. A follow gate asks the person to follow the account before the link arrives, and an email gate asks for an address. Each one adds copy to write and a step to test.
- The monthly report. On Growth and up, link analytics show who clicked each link and the country they clicked from. The numbers come from the tool, and the write-up in your own format is hours of your time.
- Testing before each post goes live. Comment the keyword from a personal account and read the DM that arrives.
- The tool cost. The next section places it.
Where does the tool cost fit in the price?
The tool cost is the floor of a fee, not the fee. Whichever tool you use, it is a monthly plan, and whatever you charge has to cover that plan before any of your own hours are paid.
On inDM, the prices are these, in US dollars a month, with tax added at checkout where it is due:
- Growth: $4.99 the first month, then $14.99 a month, for up to 5 Instagram accounts in one workspace.
- Agency Lite: $39 a month for up to 15 accounts.
- Agency Pro: $99 a month for 30 accounts, then $3 a month for each one after, with a dedicated account manager.
Nothing is metered on any plan, so a client's busy month does not change the bill, and the whole team can join with no seat count. The DM automation cost calculator runs the sum for any number of accounts, and our pricing page shows every plan side by side. Per client, the tool share is a few dollars a month, which is a small line inside a retainer.
What does the tool cost per client at 12 clients?
For example, an agency with 12 clients on Agency Lite pays $39 a month for the tool, which is $3.25 a client. Whatever the agency charges per client covers its planning, writing, testing and reporting time, so the fee is set by those hours rather than by the tool.
The share moves with the roster. With 6 of those clients, the same plan is $6.50 a client, and an agency with 4 clients on Growth pays $14.99 a month, about $3.75 a client. To check a fee you are considering, multiply it by your number of clients, then subtract the tool cost and the value of your hours. Nothing in this example is a recommended fee.
How do you price when clients pay for their own tool?
When a client pays for their own tool, you charge for the work alone, and the tool cost stays out of your fee. The client holds their own plan and their own bill, and your fee covers the planning, writing, testing and report.
On inDM, you can also earn a referral share. inDM's referral program pays 30% of every payment a referred creator makes for as long as they keep paying, with a 60-day window from the moment someone opens your link to the moment they sign up. What that comes to depends on how many of your clients sign up and which plan they choose.
A referred client runs their own workspace, while an agency plan holds the clients' accounts in the agency's, so each Instagram account takes one route or the other, not both. The ManyChat affiliate program against one plan for every client sets out when each route fits.
The honest boundary: what these numbers are
- Public offers and published guides, not a survey. The figures above are what we could open on 12 October 2026, plus rate guides whose authors estimate. They do not describe what agencies in general charge or what clients in general pay.
- Markets and currencies differ. The offers are in dollars and euros, and a fee that suits one country may not suit another.
- Marketplace listings are not included. Gig packages and rate ranges on marketplaces such as Fiverr and Upwork were not readable for this page, so none appear here.
- No income promises. None of this says what an agency will earn, what a client will pay or what a fee should be. Referral commission depends on how many clients sign up and what they pay.
What to do next
Choose the shape first: setup, retainer or both. Then count the hours the planning, writing and report take, and add the tool cost. Instagram DM automation for agencies lists what an agency workspace includes on the tool side, and Instagram DM automation for social media managers covers the one-person version.
