The best Instagram bio ideas tell a stranger who the page is for, what they get from following it, and the one thing to do next, in 150 characters or fewer. Below are 36 original bios sorted by the job each one does, five fill-in templates, and Instagram's limits for bios and bio links, checked on 12 October 2026.
What are the best ideas for an Instagram bio?
The best ideas for an Instagram bio give the page one job and use only the words that job needs. Instagram's Help Center says a bio can run to 150 characters and that anyone can see it (read 12 October 2026), which leaves room for two or three short sentences.
Pick the job first: earn a follow, start a message, win a booking, or show who you are. The groups below follow those jobs. Every bio here is invented for this page, so none is a real account or a case study. Copy the shape, then put your own details in. The method behind the shapes is in how to write an Instagram bio.
What are good bio ideas if you want more followers?
A bio that earns a follow says who the page is for and how often it shows up. Each names a type of person and a rhythm, so a visitor can tell at a glance whether the page is theirs.
- Home cooking for people who own one pan. A new weeknight dinner every Tuesday and Friday.
- Plain-English money lessons for freelancers. Short videos twice a week, no jargon.
- Learning to run at 41 and filming every awkward mile. Follow for slow progress and honest gear reviews.
- Small-flat gardening: herbs, tomatoes and one stubborn fig tree. A new reel every Sunday.
- Ten-minute strength workouts for desk workers. Save the one that fits your day.
- I read one nonfiction book a week and tell you if it earns your time. Reviews every Thursday.
Still deciding what the page is about? Start with what a niche is, then come back.
What are good bio ideas if you want people to send a message?
Name one word to send, and make sure something answers it. A bio can end with a line such as "DM PRICING", which gives a visitor a smaller step than a link and a clear picture of what comes back.
- Meal prep for busy parents. DM MEALPLAN and this week's shopping list lands in your inbox.
- Wedding photographer for small, loud, joyful weddings. DM PRICING for packages and open dates.
- Resume feedback for career changers. DM CHECKLIST for the five things I fix first.
- Original watercolours and prints. DM PRINTS to see what is in the shop this month.
- Pilates for stiff backs. DM ROUTINE and I will send a free ten-minute starter session.
- Spreadsheet templates for small studios. DM TEMPLATE for the free starter pack.
Every keyword above is five letters or longer on purpose, because a short word can start a lot of ordinary words. Our guide to choosing a DM keyword shows how to check yours.
Only promise a word your account can answer. inDM can reply to a keyword DM on a Business or Creator account, through Instagram's official API and Instagram's own login, so it never sees your password. Instagram lets an automation reply only to people who have contacted you first, which is why the bio asks for the message instead of sending one.
What are good bio ideas for a business or a shop?
A business bio works hardest when it says what you sell or do, when or where, and how to buy or book.
- Family-run bakery. Sourdough, cinnamon rolls and custom cakes. Orders close Thursday night.
- Dog grooming in a quiet one-room studio. By appointment, Tuesday to Saturday. Book below.
- Handmade ceramic mugs in small batches. New pieces drop the first Friday of every month.
- Physiotherapy for runners. Assessments Monday to Thursday. Tap below to book.
- Independent bookshop, open 9 to 6. Staff picks every Monday. Order for pickup by DM.
- Brand design for new cafes and bars. DM BRANDING for a project quote.
If a bio says to book below, there has to be something below. Instagram's Help Center describes Book now, Reserve and Order food buttons for business profiles, which work through partner providers you already use, and only one shows at a time (read 12 October 2026). Otherwise point to a profile link, covered further down.
What are good bio ideas for coaches and teachers?
Coaches and teachers can lead with the person they teach and the worry that person has.
- Public speaking for people who hate public speaking. Small groups, kind feedback, real practice.
- Piano lessons for adults who quit as kids. Online, one-to-one. DM LESSONS for a free first call.
- Calm study habits for nursing students. A new method every Wednesday.
- Beginner Spanish in ten minutes a day. Voice notes, not grammar tables.
What are some cute things to put in your Instagram bio?
Cute bios work when they are small and specific: one habit, one object, one place.
- Collecting small joys and big mugs.
- Soft heart, loud laugh, tiny garden.
- Probably making tea. Possibly late.
- Cat person with nine houseplants (survivors only).
- Chasing golden hour and good bakeries.
- A scrapbook of ordinary days.
- Be kind. Eat dessert. Go outside.
- Currently reading, baking or napping. Sometimes all three.
What are good short bios that still say something?
A short bio can be a single image or a single habit, as long as a stranger can picture the person.
- Quiet mornings. Loud playlists.
- More walking than talking.
- Notes from a slow life.
- I make small things and post the ones that worked.
- Good coffee, bad puns, great dogs.
- Mostly walking. Occasionally arriving.
What Instagram bio template can I fill in?
An Instagram bio template is a sentence frame with slots for your own details. These five match the jobs above, and each slot should get the most specific word you have.
- The question frame: Wondering [question your audience asks]? I answer one every [day]. [Next step].
- The craft frame: [What you make] in [place]. [Hours or release rhythm]. [How to order].
- The audience frame: [What you teach or share] for [the person you share it with]. [Rhythm].
- The keyword frame: [What you give away]. DM [KEYWORD] and it arrives in your inbox.
- The personality frame: [Two things you love]. [One habit]. [One line on what you post].
Fill in the slots, then read the result out loud. If it sounds like something anyone could have written, make one slot more specific.
How long can an Instagram bio be?
An Instagram bio can be up to 150 characters (Instagram Help Center, read 12 October 2026). Every example on this page was counted with spaces included and stays under that limit. The longest is 103 characters.
None of them uses an emoji, because the Help Center page gives the 150-character limit but does not say how emoji are counted. If you add one, paste your final version into the app and watch its counter.
Do words in my bio help people find me?
Yes, according to Instagram's own guidance, though that guidance is dated. Instagram wrote on 25 August 2021 that its search tries to match what people type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places, and that a bio should include keywords about who you are and what the profile is about. The same post says sharing your location makes it easier for people nearby to find you.
Professional accounts also list improved discovery: posts and reels may appear in search engine results (Help Center, read 12 October 2026). So write the plain words for your topic, and your area if you serve one. We have not verified how search treats decorative fonts, so keep searchable words in ordinary letters.
How many links can an Instagram bio hold?
An Instagram profile can hold up to 5 links, and Instagram's Help Center says anyone, on or off Instagram, can see them. In the app, go to Edit profile, tap Links, then add your link. To change the order, tap Options, then Reorder links. The Help Center says adding links is not available on computers.
One of those five can start a conversation. An ig.me link in the form ig.me/m/yourusername opens a DM thread with your account, according to Meta's developer documentation (read 12 October 2026), and our free DM link generator builds one. Meta notes that ig.me links are not supported on Instagram Web at the moment. With five slots, a link in bio can work as a short menu.
Where this stops working
- No bio comes with a result. We found no Instagram figures on which bios earn follows or messages, so nothing above carries a promised outcome. To test one, change a single thing and compare your new followers over equal periods in Insights.
- Some limits we could not confirm. We found no Instagram source for how emoji count toward the 150 characters, so the examples leave them out.
- A keyword line needs something to answer it. Automation can reply only to people who messaged you first. A bio that asks for a word nobody answers is worse than a plain one.
- The search advice is older than this page. Instagram's search post is more than five years old. Treat it as guidance, not a guarantee.
- Your bio is public. Instagram's comparison of public and private accounts says anyone, on or off Instagram, can see a profile's bio, even on a private account. Keep private details out.
Choose the one job your page needs most this month, write a single bio for it, and let your own follower numbers decide whether to keep it.
