Instagram DM automation for podcasters sends the episode link the moment a listener comments a keyword on your clip. The automation replies under the comment and sends one private message with the link. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days, so that single message should carry the one next step: listen.
A podcast gives a DM five jobs: the episode link, guest pitches, sponsor requests, show notes and the email list. This page covers each one, what Instagram, Spotify and Apple say you can do (with the dates we read them), and where automation stops.
How to promote a podcast on Instagram with one clip and one word
Post a short clip from the episode as a Reel, tell people the one word to comment, and send everyone who comments to the same link.
Instagram's Help Center, read 15 October 2026, says a reel can run up to 20 minutes, and also says reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. A clip meant to reach people who don't follow you yet should stay under 3 minutes and end on the question the full episode answers.
Three habits make the clip do its job:
- Say the word twice. Once in the last seconds of the clip, once in the first line of the caption: "Comment LISTEN and I'll send you the full episode."
- Keep one word across episodes. The same word every week teaches your audience what to type, and nothing in your setup changes between releases.
- Give the profile the same destination. Instagram lets a profile hold up to 5 links (Help Center, read 15 October 2026), so keep the show's main page there for people who arrive without commenting. The link-in-bio entry covers why creators pair that link with a DM.
How do you send a podcast episode link on Instagram?
Send it as a link in a private message, so the listener is one tap from the episode.
The link itself comes from the app that hosts your show:
- Spotify for Creators lets you make a named link for an episode, so you can call one "Instagram" and see its clicks, plays and conversion rate under Analytics, then Discovery, then Sharing. Spotify's support page (read 15 October 2026) says a play counts toward a link only if it happens within 7 days of the click, that links copied from the Spotify app itself can't be tracked, and that you can't make a link for an unpublished episode.
- Apple Podcasts for Creators generates a short link for a show or an episode: search for it in the marketing tools, scroll to Short Link, choose Generate Short Link, then copy it (podcasters.apple.com, read 15 October 2026).
Which link goes in the DM depends on where your listeners are. Instagram's rule is at most 3 link buttons in one message. One link is the simplest choice: a page on your own site that lists where to listen. Three buttons suit a show whose audience splits across three apps.
People who don't follow you get the private reply in their Requests folder, not their inbox. Meta's documentation (updated 30 June 2026) puts the reply in the Inbox for a follower and in the Request folder for anyone else, so add "check your message requests" to the caption. The private reply entry covers the rule.
Before you promote an episode, send the DM to a second account and tap through on a phone. Then check that the click shows up in your hosting app's numbers.
What does podcast Instagram marketing look like in a normal week?
Podcast Instagram marketing comes down to three jobs per episode: get a clip in front of new people, hand over the link when they ask, and keep the people who asked.
- The clip is a Reel under 3 minutes with the keyword in the caption.
- The link goes out by DM when someone comments. A second clip from the same episode a few days later can reuse the same keyword, so the automation stays untouched.
- The list is an ask before the link. Asking for an email address first costs you an extra step for the listener, and in return you own a way to tell them about the next episode. Collect emails from Instagram walks through the ask. A follow ask works the same way, if growing the account matters more than the list.
Choose the order that suits your show. A show with a small, loyal audience may skip the ask entirely and send the link straight away.
How do you handle guest pitches and sponsor requests?
Give each one its own keyword and its own page, so a pitch arrives as a filled-in form and not as a long message.
A keyword such as GUEST can send your guest form, and SPONSOR can send your media kit, a page on your site with your show's format and who to contact. When someone sends you either word in a DM, Instagram opens a 24-hour window for you to reply. Read every pitch yourself before agreeing to anything: the automation hands over the form and nothing more.
Instagram has a built-in option for short answers. Its Help Center (read 15 October 2026) says business and creator accounts can show up to four frequently asked questions to people who message them, each with an optional automated response. A person who taps one of those questions lands in your Requests folder, and you accept the request before you reply. Questions cover the short answers; a keyword that sends a form link covers the longer ones.
Can show notes go out by DM?
Yes: a keyword such as NOTES can send the link to the page that holds your show notes. Meta's messaging documentation (updated 28 September 2026) lists links among the things a message can contain.
Put the references, books and guest links on one page per episode, then send that page. The DM stays short, and the list of links lives somewhere you can edit after the episode is out.
How do you set up the keyword automation?
In inDM, a comment-to-DM automation takes a few minutes: set the keyword, write the DM, add the link, and check the live preview before anything sends. You connect through Instagram's own login, so the password never leaves Instagram, and the account needs to be a Business or Creator account. The setup guide walks through it, and how to choose a DM keyword helps you pick the word. The content creators page shows how creators use it.
The keyword ignores capital letters and fires when a word in the comment starts with it, so LISTEN also catches "listening". Keywords of one or two letters must be the whole word. The same setup works for story replies, which suits an episode announcement posted to Stories.
Free is $0 forever with no card: unlimited messages, every automation type, the follow gate and the email gate, a contacts list you can export as a CSV file, analytics and an inbox, for one Instagram account. Growth adds up to 3 links in one DM, which suits a show that wants Spotify, Apple and YouTube buttons together. It is $4.99 for the first month, then $14.99 a month.
Each link goes out through the automation's own address so it can count taps. That is worth knowing if you track plays in your hosting app, and the last section covers it.
Where this stops working
- It only answers people who reached out first. A listener who never commented or messaged can't be sent the link, so your profile link still matters.
- One private reply per comment, within 7 days. Meta's documentation (updated 30 June 2026) adds that a follow-up message can only be sent if the person replies, and within 24 hours of that reply.
- Instagram decides who sees the clip. A Reel under 3 minutes is eligible to be recommended to new audiences, and nothing guarantees it.
- Nothing here is a measurement. We have no listener data and quote none. Check your own hosting numbers before and after.
- We have not tested how Spotify counts clicks on links that pass through a tap-counting address. Test one episode and compare the automation's taps with Spotify's Sharing numbers before you rely on either.
The next time a clip does well, the people asking where to listen get the link while they are still curious, and you get the week back to record the next episode.
