Instagram DM scripts work best as short conversations, not single messages: a first reply that delivers what was asked, one question, an offer, an answer to the likeliest doubt, a close and one follow-up. Each message carries one ask, and the script continues only while the person keeps replying inside Instagram's 24-hour window.
The scripts below are starting points we wrote, not tested results, and nothing here is a conversion figure. The rules come from Meta's developer pages, read on 14 October 2026. For single copy-and-paste messages see Instagram DM templates, and for the whole selling workflow see how to sell on Instagram DMs.
How does a DM script fit Instagram's rules?
A script has to fit three rules, because they decide which turns can be automatic and which have to be you.
- Someone starts it. A comment, a story reply or a message. A comment earns one private reply, sent within 7 days of the comment.
- Their reply opens the window. After the person answers, you can write again for 24 hours. Meta says follow-ups in a conversation started by a comment go out only if the person responds, and within 24 hours of that response. The clock is explained in Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.
- Each message has a size. Text is capped at 1,000 bytes, and a message carries at most 3 link buttons.
So a script has two kinds of turn. The first message is automatic: written ahead and previewed before it goes out. The turns after a reply are yours, answered from the inbox, or a keyword reply you wrote ahead for a word like "yes."
What is a good Instagram DM sales script?
A good Instagram DM sales script has five beats: deliver, ask, offer, answer the doubt, close. Each beat is one short message.
- Deliver what the comment asked for, with the link as a button.
- Ask one question that is easy to answer in a word.
- Offer the price and the next step in two lines.
- Answer the doubt the person raises, with a fact you can stand behind.
- Close with one link and an invitation to reply if anything is stuck.
Here is the flow for a small candle shop. Square brackets are yours to fill in.
Message 1, automatic, sent as the private reply to the comment "CANDLE": Here's the winter range you asked about, with scents and burn times inside. Tap the button to look. Which scent are you leaning toward?
Their reply: Pine!
Message 2, you, from the inbox: Good pick. Pine is [price] and ships in [days]. Want me to send the checkout link?
Message 3, after they say yes: Here you go: [button]. Reply here if the checkout gives you any trouble.
Message 4, a follow-up inside the window if they go quiet: No rush on the Pine one. The page is right there, and I'm here if a question comes up.
Which DM script for selling handles "not sure yet"?
The reply to a doubt should name the doubt, give one fact, and leave the choice with the person. Three doubts come up most.
- Price: "Fair question. The [product] is [price] because [one true reason]. If it isn't right, [your return policy in one line]."
- Trust: "Totally reasonable to check. Here are [reviews page or a real example you can share]. Ask me anything before you decide."
- Timing: "No pressure. I'll leave the link here. Tell me [date or event] and I'll tell you if it arrives in time."
Never invent the fact. A script that promises a refund you do not offer is worse than no script.
What are some Instagram DM script examples by goal?
Four goals cover most creators and shops: a free guide, a booking, an affiliate link and a silent thread. Each flow below starts with an automatic message and lists the turns that follow.
A free guide, with an email first. The email ask comes before the link.
Message 1, automatic: Happy to send the [guide name]. Reply with your email and I'll send it here. I'll only use it for [what you'll send].
Message 2, automatic once the email arrives: Sent! Tap the button to open it. Which part do you want help with first?
Booking a call or a visit.
Message 1, automatic: Thanks for asking about [service]. What are you hoping to get help with? A line is plenty.
Message 2, you: Got it. I have [two times] open this week. Which suits you?
Message 3, after they pick: Booked. Here's the confirmation page: [button]. Reply here if you need to move it.
An affiliate link or a discount code.
Message 1, automatic: Here's the [product] link: [button]. Use code [CODE] at checkout. It works until [date].
Message 2, a follow-up inside the window: Did the link open for you? Reply if the code doesn't work and I'll check it.
A silent thread. If the person stopped replying, one message inside the window is enough: "Still thinking about it? Happy to answer anything before you decide." After that, leave it.
How do you follow up without breaking the 24-hour window?
Send the follow-up while the window is open, and make it one short message. Growth adds an automatic follow-up message that goes out 30 minutes to 20 hours after the first, which stays inside the window on purpose.
Once 24 hours pass without a reply, free messages stop until the person writes again or comments again. For the wording of that reminder, see automated messages that sound human.
Where this stops working
- A script cannot start a conversation. inDM cannot DM people who never contacted you, cannot DM someone for following you, and cannot schedule a DM for a set time. It has no AI-written replies either, so every turn is one you wrote.
- A script ends when the person stops replying. Plan for the shortest version to be the whole script.
- Nothing here is proven to convert. We have no conversion figures for these scripts and publish none. Test one change at a time on your own audience.
- Volume has limits. Instagram's Help Center says it limits messages people may not want, such as spam, and that an account warned about sending too many messages and carrying on may be unable to send for a period. Do not paste a script to people who did not ask.
What this changes for you
Pick one goal, write the first message and the two replies you expect, and test the flow from a second account. Read it the way the other person will, one message at a time.
