Instagram post tracking means three different jobs: reading how your own post performed, checking when a post went up, and finding posts other people make about you. Open your post and tap View insights for the first, look under the caption for the second, and use your Tagged tab and Tags and mentions settings for the third.
How do I track how my own Instagram post is performing?
Open the post from your profile and tap View insights. Instagram's Help Center says any public account, personal or professional, can view Insights, so you do not need a professional account for this (read 14 October 2026).
For a post, Instagram lists views (the number of times your content has been displayed), interactions (actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares) and profile activity (what people do on your profile after engaging with the post). For a reel, Instagram lists views, watch time, viewers, average watch time and follows.
To see all your posts together, open your profile, then your professional dashboard (or Your dashboard on a personal account), and tap Content you shared. On instagram.com, choose Dashboard, then Insights (Your dashboard on a personal account), then Content, and pick the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days. Instagram says you can filter your content by media type, reach, interactions and time frame.
Two windows matter. Instagram keeps post insights for up to two years, and shows account insights for any period within the past 90 days. Our guide to what each Insights number means defines the metrics, and where the professional dashboard lives covers the menu.
How do I set up an Instagram post tracker?
A spreadsheet with one row per post is enough. Fill it in on a fixed day each week, because Instagram's account-level numbers only reach back 90 days.
| Column | What to enter | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Date posted | The day it went up | Under the caption, or Scheduled content for planned posts |
| Format | Post, carousel, reel or story | Your own label |
| Topic or hook | One line on what it was about | Your own label |
| Views | Times the content was displayed | View insights |
| Interactions | Likes, comments, saves and shares together | View insights |
| Profile activity or follows | What people did next | View insights (follows for reels) |
| Watch time | For reels, average watch time | Reel insights |
| Notes | What you would repeat or change | Your own |
Add one more column for a rate if you want one. Instagram's definitions in the Help Center pages we read are all counts, so an engagement rate is something you work out yourself. Choose one denominator, such as views, and keep it, because a rate divided by followers cannot be compared with one divided by views. The engagement rate calculator does the sum for you.
How to see when an Instagram post was posted
Look at the bottom of the post, below the caption and comments. That is Instagram's own instruction in its Help Center article on seeing when a post was shared.
For posts you have planned, open your profile, tap Menu, then Scheduled content under Your insights and tools. Instagram lets a public account schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days ahead, and our page on scheduling Instagram posts covers the steps. For posts you have already published, the content library in Insights lists them and lets you filter by time frame.
The Help Center article names where the date sits and says nothing about a time of day, so we do not promise an exact clock time for someone else's post.
How to track UGC on Instagram
Check five places, because each one catches a different type of post.
- Your Tagged tab. Photos and videos where someone tags you appear under Tagged on your profile. By default they are added to your profile automatically. If you want to approve them first, open Settings, then Tags and mentions, and turn on manual approval.
- Mentions. On a business account, you get a notification in your Activity feed when someone mentions your business in their stories, comments or captions. You choose who can mention you in Tags and mentions: everyone, people you follow, or no one.
- Story mentions. When someone you follow mentions you in a story, you get a direct message with a preview. If you do not follow them, it arrives as a message request. The story does not appear in your Tagged tab and it disappears after 24 hours unless the person adds it to a highlight, so check your inbox often.
- Branded content. If you work with creators, you can approve who may tag your business: tap Menu, then Business tools and controls, then Branded content, and turn on manual approval of content creators.
- Hashtag pages. A hashtag page shows public posts that use it. Posts from private accounts do not appear, and Instagram says the order depends on when a post was shared and how people engage with it, so the page is a window onto the hashtag, not a full list.
Tools that read Instagram data have tighter limits than the app. Meta's documentation (updated 18 March 2026) says mentions on stories are not supported, and that notifications are not sent when the post comes from a private account. For hashtags, Meta's documentation (updated 17 August 2026) says a tool gets public posts from the 24 hours before the search, can look up 30 different hashtags in a rolling 7 days, and cannot request the account name on the posts it finds. A tool can count hashtag posts. It cannot tell you who made them.
Keep a second sheet for UGC with the handle, the post link, the date, what the post shows, whether you asked to reuse it, and the answer. A tag is not permission. Instagram's Help Center says that in general the person who creates an original work owns the copyright in it, and its Repost button, where it is available, only works on public posts and reels whose creator allows reposts. For anything else, ask in a DM and keep the reply with the post link.
Where this stops working
- Insights are counts and time-limited. Account numbers reach back 90 days and post numbers two years. If you switch a public account back to private, Instagram says you lose access to Insights, and you can regain it within 90 days by switching back to public.
- Tagged and mentioned posts only. A post that names you in words, with no tag or mention, will not appear in any of the places above.
- Hashtag tools cannot name the author. They can count the posts and cannot name the account behind them.
- No clock time. The Help Center says where the date is and stops there.
- Some numbers are still changing. Instagram says views is being introduced gradually, that some metrics are estimated and in development, and that certain messaging metrics are unavailable in Europe and Japan.
- We read pages and did not open a live account. Menu names can differ in your app, so check yours.
When a post sends people to a DM link, inDM's Growth plan shows who clicks it and where they are, which gives your tracker a column for clicks next to the views.
