How-to guide

Put your Instagram on a schedule, then let it answer back

To automate Instagram posts, schedule them in the Instagram app (any public account, up to 25 a day, up to 30 days ahead) or in Meta Business Suite. Then add a tool that runs through Instagram's own login to answer the comments and DMs those posts bring. Instagram's Help Center, read 13 October 2026, covers the first half.

Table of contents

Before you start

  • A public Instagram account to schedule posts in the app. Instagram's Help Center asks for a public account there and does not name Business or Creator
  • A Business or Creator account for anything that publishes or replies through a tool. Switching is free
  • One post or reel your audience already asks questions under, and the link or answer you would send them

The steps

How do I automate Instagram without risking my account?

Automate only through the routes Instagram built, and stay away from any tool that asks for your Instagram password. Instagram's Terms of Use, read on 13 October 2026, say you cannot create accounts or collect information in an automated way without Instagram's express permission, and the rule applies even when the automation runs while you are logged in. Instagram's Help Center page on restricted accounts lists reasons for a restriction that include your account automating access without permission, a password handed to a third-party app, and a service used to interact with Instagram in ways Instagram has not allowed.

Three jobs have an official route:

  • Publishing posts. Instagram's own scheduler, Meta Business Suite, or a tool on Instagram's publishing connection.
  • Answering comments. A tool that replies to a comment on Instagram's official connection.
  • Answering DMs. The same connection, replying to someone who messaged you first.

The one-question test for any tool: does it ask for your Instagram password? A tool on the official connection sends you to Instagram's own login screen to approve access. A tool that asks for the password is the kind Instagram's article warns about. What Meta permits is set out in is Instagram DM automation allowed.

Tip: To see what already has access, open instagram.com, click More, then Settings, then Website permissions, then Apps and Websites, then Active. Click Remove next to anything you no longer use.

Schedule posts inside the Instagram app

Any public Instagram account can schedule posts and Reels in the app, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days ahead. Tap Create, then Post or Reel, pick your media and add a caption. Tap More options, turn on Schedule this post (or Schedule this reel), choose a date and time, then tap Done, Back and Schedule. Instagram's Help Center article, read on 13 October 2026, adds that scheduled content keeps the privacy and audience settings you had when you scheduled it, and that product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers are not compatible with scheduling.

Your queue sits at Profile, then Menu, then Scheduled content, where each post has Delete, Edit post, Reschedule and Share now. The longer walk-through, including Stories and the Meta One options, is in can you schedule Instagram posts.

Tip: Schedule a week of posts in one sitting. The time you save is the time you spend answering the people who comment.

Schedule from a computer in Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite schedules Instagram posts from a computer: click Create post, choose your Instagram profile under Post to, add media, pick a date under Scheduling options and click Schedule. Meta's Business Help Center, read on 13 October 2026, says you need either full control of the account or Content permission for it. Its Active times button suggests hours based on when followers were most active over the past seven days, and posting to Instagram from there is limited to ten photos.

Waiting posts appear under Content, then Posts and reels, in the Scheduled tab, where you can edit, reschedule, move to drafts or delete. If you run several accounts, how to manage multiple Instagram accounts covers how Business Suite groups them.

Tip: Active times is a suggestion built from seven days of follower activity. Compare it with your own insights before you rely on it.

Choose a scheduling tool that uses Instagram's own login

A scheduling tool is on the official path when it connects through Instagram's own login and publishes through Meta's publishing connection. Meta's Content Publishing documentation, updated 30 June 2026 and read on 13 October 2026, covers Instagram professional accounts. It limits each account to 100 posts published this way in any rolling 24 hours, counts a carousel as one post, and caps a carousel at ten images or videos. The page recommends that any tool letting people schedule posts enforce that daily ceiling itself.

Before you connect one, run the password test from step 1. After you connect, Instagram's Apps and Websites article notes that apps managing business and creator accounts are not expired after 90 days of inactivity, because they may need continuous access. So remove a tool yourself when you stop using it.

Tip: Check the tool's page for the words Instagram login, not Instagram password. Those two words separate the official kind from the other kind.

How do I automate Instagram comments and DMs?

Use comment-to-DM: someone comments a keyword on a post, and your automation sends a short public reply and a private DM with the link or answer. The DM goes out in seconds, whether you are online or not.

Instagram has free replies of its own, and they are worth knowing. The Instagram app lets you add up to four frequently asked questions with optional automatic answers, found under Messages, then Tools. Meta Business Suite Inbox automations on desktop add an instant reply, an away message, keyword replies and a Comment to message option. Meta's Inbox automations page, read on 13 October 2026, says a keyword reply goes out after 15 minutes unless you answer first, and that those keywords are case-sensitive. Does Instagram have auto reply explains where they stop.

Any tool on the official connection plays by Meta's rules. Meta's private reply rules, updated 30 June 2026, allow one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, and follow-up messages only if the person responds, within 24 hours of that response. Meta's Overview page, updated 28 September 2026, sets a ceiling of 750 private replies an hour per account.

One more rule is about honesty. Meta's messaging guide, updated 28 September 2026, says an automated chat must say it is automated where the law requires it, and recommends saying so even where it does not. One short line at the start of the DM does it.

Tip: Keep the public reply to one short line, such as Sent, check your DMs. The DM carries the real answer.

Set up the keyword reply in a few minutes

Connect your account, pick the post, choose one keyword, write the reply and the DM, check the preview and set it live. inDM does this on Instagram's official connection. You approve access on Instagram's own login screen, so the tool never sees your password, and inDM is an approved Meta Tech Provider, which means Meta reviewed the app. That approval is not an endorsement. The Free plan is $0 forever with no card, with unlimited messages and every automation type, and the automation replies within seconds.

Keywords ignore capital letters and fire when a word in the comment starts with your keyword, so ART fires on artist, not on start. A one or two letter keyword must be the whole word. How to choose a DM keyword people will type helps you pick one. The whole setup, click by click, is in set up comment-to-DM.

You write every message, because the tool has no AI-written replies. It can answer only someone who commented, replied to a story or messaged you first, and it cannot schedule a DM for a set time.

Tip: Test from a second account. Automations skip the connected account's own comments, which is the most common reason a working setup looks broken.

Line the posts and the replies up

Put the keyword in the caption of the scheduled post, and set the automation to watch every post so it is ready whatever hour the post goes live. A scheduled post does not exist until it publishes, so an automation set to watch every post attaches to whatever you publish. Say the keyword in the caption and on the last frame of a reel, so people know what to type.

After the first day, check the analytics that come with every plan: how many times the automation fired and how many DMs were delivered. If the fired count is low, the caption is the thing to change. People never asked. If the count is healthy and the link goes unopened, the DM is the thing to change.

Each person who asked becomes a contact you can read and export as a CSV file, so the audience your scheduled posts build is one you can see.

Tip: One keyword per post. When two automations could match the same comment, only one of them will ever fire.

Where this stops working

Automation answers people who engaged first and publishes what you scheduled, and several things sit outside that.

  • No DM schedule. Instagram's scheduler covers posts and Reels. The automation in step 6 sends a DM after the person comments, replies to a story or messages you, and cannot send one at a time you set.
  • No messages to people who never contacted you. Meta's messaging guide says an app can send a message only after the person has sent your account one. So the automation in step 6 cannot message people who never reached out, and tools on Instagram's public connection cannot DM someone only because they followed you.
  • No promise from Instagram about any tool. We found no list from Instagram of tools it approves, and we can vouch only for our own. The password test is the check you can run on any of them.
  • Instagram has its own AI replies. Instagram's AI auto-reply article says professional accounts with a creator AI built in Meta AI Studio can turn them on, and that the feature is being introduced gradually. The tool in step 6 does not write replies for you.

Every limit and menu path above was read on 13 October 2026. Instagram changes both without notice, so if a label differs on your screen, search the Help Center for the article name.

Tip: If a plan needs a DM at a set time, or to people who never wrote to you, redesign the plan. Neither fits how Instagram's official connection works.
What you end up with

A week of posts scheduled in one sitting, a connected tool you can revoke from Instagram's settings, and a keyword reply that answers every comment while you are away from the app.

Good to know

Questions, answered plainly

Is Instagram automation allowed?

Yes, when it runs through Instagram's own official routes. Instagram's Terms of Use, read on 13 October 2026, do not allow creating accounts or collecting information in an automated way without Instagram's express permission. Scheduling in the app, Meta Business Suite, and tools connected through Instagram's own login are the sanctioned routes. A tool that asks for your Instagram password is the kind Instagram's Help Center links to account restrictions.

Can I automate Instagram without giving out my password?

Yes, and you should. A tool on the official connection sends you to Instagram's own login screen to approve access, which is why it never needs your password. You can review and remove connected apps on a computer under More, Settings, Website permissions, then Apps and Websites. If a tool asks you to type your Instagram password into its own form, stop there.

How many Instagram posts can I schedule?

In the Instagram app, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days ahead, on a public account, according to Instagram's Help Center. A tool that publishes through Instagram's official connection is limited to 100 posts in any rolling 24 hours per account, per Meta's developer documentation. Both limits were read on 13 October 2026.

Can I schedule Instagram DMs?

Not for a set time. An automated DM answers someone who commented, replied to a story or messaged you first, and it goes out within seconds of that action. Instagram's own scheduler covers posts and Reels, not messages.
