Caption drafts in your words, with no AI
Pick what the post is for, fill in a topic, an offer and a comment keyword, and get three caption drafts to edit. Each draft has a live character count and a copy button.
There is no AI in this tool. Every caption below is a template we wrote, with your words dropped into the blanks. Nothing is pre-filled, and nothing is sent anywhere.
A few words, no full stop. It goes into the sentences as you type it.
Used by the announcement and the DM goals.
Used by the DM goal. One plain word people can type from memory.
Square brackets are blanks only you can fill, so replace each one before you post. You can edit a draft in its own box. Changing a box above writes the drafts again, so finish your wording last. No hashtags are added: Instagram's Help Center, read 30 October 2026, allows up to 5 tags on a post. The 2,200 figure is from Meta's developer documentation for captions published through its tools, because the Help Center gives no caption length. Instagram does not publish how it counts emoji or line breaks, so leave yourself some room. For blank lines that survive a paste, use the Instagram line breaker. More caption templates, by goal.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type here is stored or sent anywhere.

An Instagram caption generator turns a few details about your post into caption drafts you can edit and copy. This free one uses no AI: every draft is a template we wrote, with your topic, offer and comment keyword dropped into the blanks. You pick a goal, read three drafts, and see a live character count on each.
Every Instagram figure on this page was read on 30 October 2026. The templates are our own writing, and we have not measured how any of them performs.
Is this a free Instagram caption generator?
Yes. It costs nothing, asks for no account, and runs in your browser, so the words you type are not stored or sent anywhere. Pick a goal, type a few words in each box, and three drafts appear straight away. Each goal has six templates, and one button swaps in the second set of three.
Why choose a caption generator without AI?
Because you decide every word that goes out, and the same boxes always give the same drafts. A template tool cannot invent a detail about you, your offer or your results. It gives you the shape of a caption and leaves the true parts to you, which is why some drafts carry bracketed blanks such as [your lesson].
If you prefer to draft with an AI assistant, our post on ChatGPT prompts for Instagram has prompts to copy and edit.
What does each goal write?
Each goal writes a different caption shape for one job: a conversation, a save, an announcement, a link by DM or a story. All five arrange the same three beats: a first line that earns the tap, a middle that delivers what the post promised, and one next step.
- Start a conversation. A question, a poll or a view you invite people to answer.
- Earn a save. A list, a checklist or a short method someone keeps for later.
- Announce something. Your offer, who it is for and where the details are.
- Hand out a link by DM. What you are giving away and the word to comment.
- Tell the story behind it. Where something started, what surprised you and what you do now.
How do I use the comment keyword draft?
Name the offer first, then the word, and make sure something arrives when someone types it. "Comment CHECKLIST and I will send it to your DMs" works because the person knows what they are asking for. Choose one plain word people can type from memory, and see our guide to choosing a DM keyword.
The keyword box follows the matching rules inDM uses. Capital letters do not matter, and a keyword fires when a word in the comment starts with it, so ART fires on "artist" but not on "start". A keyword of one or two letters must be the whole word. Meta's documentation for private replies, read on 30 October 2026, says only one message can be sent to a commenter, and that it must go out within 7 days of the comment. A keyword caption works best while the post is fresh. The private reply and keyword trigger entries have the short versions, and the engagement bait entry explains why the comment should reliably bring the thing.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Instagram's Help Center gives no caption length, and Meta's developer documentation lists a maximum of 2200 characters for captions published through its tools. The page for publishing media, read on 30 October 2026, also lists 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags. It describes posts published through Meta's tools, not posts written in the app, so the counter here measures against 2,200 and turns red when a draft goes over.
Hashtags are the number to watch in the app. Instagram's Help Center, read on 30 October 2026, says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. This generator adds none, and our hashtag generator mixes five by reach.
We found no figure from Instagram for how much of a caption shows before "more", so we quote none.
Can an Instagram caption ideas generator replace your own ideas?
No. This tool writes the frame of a caption, and the idea has to come from your audience. Read the last month of your comments, DMs and story replies and list what people ask twice. Each repeated question is a caption: the story goal suits one you answered at length, and the save goal suits one with steps. Our posts on Instagram content ideas and Instagram caption templates give more places to look, and the Instagram line breaker handles spacing.
Where this stops working
- The templates are untested. We have no data on which draft performs best for your audience. Your own saves, comments and replies are the only measurement that counts.
- A draft is a frame, not a finished caption. Bracketed blanks stay in the text until you replace them, and the tool cannot know your details.
- The count is ours. It counts each character, emoji included, as one. Instagram does not publish how it counts emoji or line breaks, so leave yourself some room.
- No hashtags, images or scheduling. The tool writes caption text only.
- A caption cannot rescue a weak post. Instagram's creator FAQ, read on 30 October 2026, asks you to drive authentic engagement with your community, meaning not clickbait, so a caption that promises more than the post delivers does not serve that goal.
- A keyword draft needs the DM to arrive. The person has to comment on your post or message you first, and Instagram allows one private reply to a comment, within 7 days of it.
If a draft asks people to comment a keyword, inDM's free comment-to-DM automation sends the DM when they do, and the setup guide takes a few minutes.
How to use it
Pick the goal
Choose what the post is for: a conversation, a save, an announcement, a link by DM or a story. Each goal has six templates, shown three at a time.
Fill in the boxes
Type what the post is about and what you are offering. For the DM goal, add one comment keyword. Leave a box empty and a bracketed blank stays in the draft for you to fill.
Edit the draft
Replace every bracket with your own detail and change any line you like. The character count under the draft updates as you type.
Copy it into Instagram
Press Copy on the draft you want and paste it into the caption box in the Instagram app. Press Show three other drafts to see the second set.

Does this caption generator use AI?
No. Every draft comes from a template written by us, and your words fill the blanks. The same boxes give the same drafts, and nothing you type is sent to a model or a server.
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
Instagram's Help Center gives no caption length. Meta's developer documentation, read on 30 October 2026, lists a maximum of 2200 characters for captions published through its tools, and this tool counts against that figure. Instagram does not publish how it counts emoji or line breaks, so leave yourself some room.
How many hashtags can I add to an Instagram caption?
Instagram's Help Center, read on 30 October 2026, says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. This generator adds no hashtags, so you choose them. The hashtag generator at indm.social/tools/hashtag-generator mixes five by reach.
How do I choose a comment keyword for a caption?
Pick one plain word people can type from memory and name it in the caption next to what they will get. In inDM, capital letters do not matter and a keyword fires when a word in the comment starts with it. A keyword of one or two letters must be the whole word.
Can I change an Instagram caption after I post it?
Yes. On a computer, Instagram's Help Center says to click Options at the top right of your post, click Edit, change the caption and click Done. You can also add a caption to a post that had none, or delete the one you wrote.
