Auto DM on Instagram is a direct message your account sends automatically when someone comments a keyword on your post, replies to your story, or messages you a keyword. It runs on a Business or Creator account through Meta's own messaging tools, it replies in seconds, and it only ever answers a person who reached out first.
You will see it called auto DM, auto-DM, IG auto DM or auto reply. They all name the same thing: the everyday word for Instagram DM automation. It is the reason a creator can post "comment GUIDE and I'll send it" and keep that promise to every person who comments, at three in the morning as easily as at noon.
The phrase also gets used loosely, and that is where most of the confusion starts. Some of what gets sold as auto DM is exactly what Instagram allows. Some of it is not, and a few of those products put the account at risk. This page separates the two. Meta's rules below were read on 23 October 2026, with each source listed at the end.
What can an Instagram auto DM reply to?
An Instagram auto DM can reply to three things, and every one of them is something the other person chose to do: a comment on your post, a reply to your story, or a message containing your keyword.
A comment on a post or reel. Someone comments your keyword and the automation sends them a private reply, a DM tied to that comment. Meta allows exactly one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of it. That reply can carry the link, and a public reply can go under the comment at the same time so everyone scrolling sees that the ask works. This is the comment-to-DM automation most people picture when they hear "auto DM".
A reply to your story. A story reply is already a DM, so the conversation is open the moment it arrives and the answer can go straight back. Story replies suit time-boxed asks: a launch, a waitlist, a code that expires on Sunday.
A DM containing your keyword. Someone messages you "PRICE" or "LINK" and the right answer goes back. This is the trigger for asks that live outside a post: a line in your bio, a newsletter, a podcast mention.
All three can run at once, on the same account.
What do people use auto DMs for?
Most auto DMs deliver one thing a person asked for: a link, a price, a code, or a way to sign up. The trigger follows from where the ask is made.
| The goal | The usual trigger | What the auto DM carries |
|---|---|---|
| Sell an affiliate or product link | Comment on a reel | The product link, with a public reply under the comment |
| Give away a guide or checklist | Comment on a post | The download, after the person shares an email |
| Take bookings | Keyword DM from your bio | Your booking page |
| Fill a launch or waitlist | Story reply | The sign-up link |
| Answer price questions | Keyword DM | The price and one next step |
| Run a giveaway | Comment on a post | The entry details, after a follow |
Two of those rows ask for something before the link arrives. An email capture step collects an address first, and a follow gate asks for the follow first. Both are optional and most automations need neither. When you want wording to start from, Instagram DM templates has messages for each situation, and automated messages on Instagram covers how to make them read like you.
What can't an auto DM do on Instagram?
An auto DM cannot start a conversation. Instagram lets a professional account message someone automatically only after that person has engaged with it, so these five requests have no permitted version on Meta's messaging tools:
- Message all your followers. There is no sanctioned way to send one message to a whole follower list. Every automated message answers something the other person did.
- Welcome every new follower. inDM cannot, because Meta keeps the follow event private: none of the events Meta lets an app listen to fires on a follow. ManyChat's Follow to DM can, but only for accounts Meta picks for its beta. The details are in can you auto-DM new followers on Instagram.
- Message people who liked a post. A like opens no conversation, so there is nothing for an automation to reply to.
- Reply whenever you like. For most actions, a message from someone opens a messaging window of 24 hours. After it closes, a new message waits until that person writes again.
- Send at a set time. Instagram lets you schedule a message by hand inside a chat on mobile, and no automation can do it for you. Can you schedule Instagram DMs has both halves.
If a tool promises one of these, ask how. The usual answer is that it logs in as you with your password and taps through the app, which is the next question.
Is auto DM allowed on Instagram?
Yes. Auto DM is allowed on Instagram when it runs through Meta's official messaging tools, on a Business or Creator account, and replies to people who engaged first. Meta built the private reply for exactly this, and it is how every legitimate auto DM tool works.
What breaks Meta's terms is a different kind of product: one that asks for your Instagram username and password, signs in as you, and operates the app on your behalf. That is how a tool can claim to message strangers or new followers, and it is the familiar route to a restricted account. The quick test is the login screen. A tool built the right way sends you to Instagram's own login and never sees your password. The full rules, quoted from Meta, are in is Instagram DM automation allowed, and is Instagram DM automation safe covers what connecting an account shares.
A personal account cannot run auto DMs on any tool that follows Meta's rules. Switching to a professional account is free and keeps your handle, posts and followers.
Doesn't Instagram have auto DM built in?
Partly. Meta Business Suite has free automated replies for Instagram, including keyword replies and a comment-to-message reply, and Instagram's own app lets you set frequently asked questions with automatic answers. They are worth knowing before you pay for anything.
The difference is speed and depth. Meta's own documentation puts a 15-minute delay on Business Suite keyword replies. A dedicated auto DM tool answers in seconds: measured on real replies, not estimated, inDM's median is 5.6 seconds from the comment to the DM. A dedicated tool also adds the public reply, the link button, the email step and the follow step. Does Instagram have auto reply sets out what the built-in options do and where each one stops, and how fast an Instagram DM automation replies has the timing.
What do auto DM tools charge for?
Auto DM tools charge for one of three things: the messages they send, the people they reach, or the size of your account. Which one a tool counts decides what a busy post costs you, so it is worth knowing before you build on one.
- Messages sent. The most common unit. Free tiers that count DMs usually allow 500 to 1,500 a month. A link held behind a button tap uses two messages per person, so the real number of finished conversations can be half the allowance.
- Contacts reached. ManyChat and Inro count the people who interact with your automations each month, so a reel that pulls in new commenters raises the bill.
- Follower count. A few tools are free below a follower threshold and charge once your account grows past it.
inDM counts none of them. The free plan runs all three auto DM triggers with nothing metered and no card, on Instagram's official tools. Growth starts with 7 days free, then $14.99 a month, and adds your name alone on the messages, up to 5 Instagram accounts, several links in one automation, a follow-up message, and broadcasts to your audience. Free auto DM for Instagram has the tool by tool comparison, and what counts as a billable DM shows how each counting unit plays out on a real post.
How do you set up your first auto DM?
Setting up an auto DM on Instagram takes about five minutes: switch to a professional account, connect it, choose what the automation answers, write the message, and test it from a second account.
- Switch to a Business or Creator account in Instagram's settings, if you have not already.
- Connect the account through Instagram's own login screen.
- Choose the trigger: a specific post or reel, a story, or a keyword sent to your inbox. Then add the keywords. They match whatever the capitalisation.
- Write the reply and preview it. The text on a link card fits 80 characters and the button label fits 20, so write to those.
- Set it live, then test it from a second account. An automation skips your own comments, so testing from the account it runs on looks like a failure when nothing is wrong.

Where auto DM stops working
A few edges worth knowing, including ours.
Earlier comments wait. inDM answers every new comment from the moment an automation goes live. It does not go back to comments left before then. CreatorFlow's own guide says its tool can reach people who commented in the previous 7 days, which is inside Meta's 7-day private reply rule, so if your plan depends on catching up an older post, that is the tool built for it.
Some replies land in Requests. Meta's documentation says a private reply goes to the person's main inbox if they follow you and to their Requests folder if they do not. The message is delivered either way, but a non-follower may not see an alert. A public reply such as "sent, check your requests" closes that gap.
The 24 hours can stretch, but rarely. For most actions the window is 24 hours. Meta's documentation says it can last up to 7 days after someone messages you from a click-to-message ad, which matters only if you run those ads.
Meta changes the rules. Everything on this page was read on the date above. Meta adjusts its messaging rules without much notice, so treat that date as this page's expiry stamp.
What this changes for you
Auto DM turns every comment, story reply and keyword DM into an answer that arrives while the person is still looking, which is the moment they are most likely to act on it.
