Messaging window

The messaging window is Meta's rule that a business account may send standard messages only within 24 hours of the person's last message to it. A DM, a story reply, or a tap on a button you sent all open it; a public comment does not, and neither does tapping a link, which takes the person off Instagram. Outside the window, ordinary automated follow-ups can't be sent until the person engages again.

Why it matters for creators

The window is why good automation answers instantly: the moment of engagement opens 24 hours of permitted conversation, and the first minutes are when a reply converts best anyway.

It also shapes strategy. You can't drip-message someone next Tuesday because they commented once today. The follow-up has to earn a fresh reply (or move the relationship to a channel you own, like email, via email capture). Tools that promise unlimited follow-up sequences on Instagram are describing something the platform doesn't permit.

The clock restarts every time that person messages again, which is why a reply that earns a response is worth more than one that closes the subject. The window sits alongside Meta's other published ceilings (750 private replies an hour, 1,000 bytes per message) in Instagram's DM limits.

Two details decide whether a second message is possible at all, and both catch people out. A comment opens no window: it buys one private reply, within 7 days, and nothing more. And a link tap extends nothing, because it sends the person to your site and tells Instagram nothing, so your most interested people can have the shortest windows. Which actions genuinely open a window, and which only look like they do, is set out in Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.

A message on a timer therefore has to fit inside the day. That is the bound on a follow-up DM: 30 minutes to 20 hours, not 24, because the window opened at the tap rather than at your message and the difference is the headroom.
