Drip sequence

A drip sequence is a series of messages sent automatically on a schedule after a trigger, each spaced by a delay. Drip sequences are standard in email; on Instagram they are sharply limited, because Meta's 24-hour messaging window closes before most sequences would finish.

Why it matters for creators

Anyone arriving from email marketing expects to build a five-day sequence and finds they cannot. The reason is the 24-hour messaging window: once a person engages, a business may message them for twenty-four hours, and after that the thread is closed until they engage again.

So an Instagram sequence is a same-day sequence, and in practice a same-hour one. There is room for a delivery and a follow-up, not for a week of nurture. Tools that advertise long DM drips are either relying on the person replying each time — which restarts the window and is genuinely fine — or describing something that will silently stop sending.

This is the strongest argument for capturing an email at some point in the funnel. The DM is unmatched for the first conversation and unusable for the fifth. A sequence that needs to run for a week needs to run somewhere you own.
