ChatGPT cannot post on Instagram by itself, but a posting plugin inside it can, and inDM is a plugin inside ChatGPT that handles what comes after you post. ChatGPT alone writes captions and ideas. Publishing needs a scheduling plugin. The inDM plugin does not post: it answers the comments your post brings in with a DM.

This page covers what ChatGPT does for your posts on its own, which plugins in its directory say they schedule or publish, why the inDM plugin is in this answer even though it never posts, and where the whole setup stops working. Everything here was checked on 27 October 2026.

What can ChatGPT do for your Instagram posts on its own?

ChatGPT on its own can write captions, hooks and post ideas, and it cannot put any of them on your Instagram account. A plain ChatGPT conversation has no connection to your account, so whatever it writes stays in the chat until you copy it into Instagram yourself.

That answers "can ChatGPT create Instagram posts". It creates the words, and you or a connected tool do the publishing. For prompts that return captions worth keeping, see these ChatGPT prompts for Instagram.

How does ChatGPT publish to Instagram?

ChatGPT publishes to Instagram through a plugin, which is a connection between ChatGPT and a posting tool. OpenAI's developer documentation describes plugins as a way to "connect your tools and services to ChatGPT". You connect one once, and from then on you can ask ChatGPT to use it in plain words. Without a connected posting tool, ChatGPT has nothing to publish with.

Which ChatGPT plugins say they schedule or publish Instagram posts?

Several plugins in ChatGPT's directory say they schedule or publish Instagram posts, and the listing for 1Social gives the most detail. We searched the directory for "instagram" from a signed-in ChatGPT account on 27 October 2026. The descriptions below are each vendor's own listing words. We did not test any of these plugins, and the order is not a ranking.

  • Instagram & TikTok by 1Social. Its listing says you can schedule and post to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads and Bluesky from a single message, schedule posts up to 30 days ahead, and see what landed and what failed on each network.
  • Buzzfy. Its listing says it connects through Instagram's official API, reads your comments and DMs and drafts replies, shows a preview, and only replies, sends, hides, publishes or schedules after you approve. The listing also says it can set up comment-to-DM automations.
  • Others whose listings say they schedule or publish social posts: Upload-Post, Postiz, SocialClaw, ViewsMax, Fuxux, PostAxis, VibeDay, Kreatoai and Adly.

The directory also lists analytics plugins, such as Windsor.ai Instagram, Socialinsider and Reelyze, which describe reading how your posts perform rather than publishing them. For the wider question of scheduling, see can you schedule Instagram posts.

Can ChatGPT make Instagram Reels?

The plugin listings we read on 27 October 2026 do not say they make Reels, so this page does not claim that ChatGPT can make one. The one listing in our search that names reels is Reelyze, which describes itself with the words "Find why reels lose viewers". That is about understanding a reel you have already posted, not producing one.

What you can safely ask ChatGPT for is the caption and the idea for a Reel. Read a plugin's own listing before you count on it for anything more.

Why is inDM in an answer about posting?

inDM is in this answer because posting is half the job, and the inDM plugin answers the comments your post brings in. The inDM plugin does not post, schedule or edit anything on your feed. It handles comment-to-DM: when someone comments your keyword, inDM sends them a DM with your link.

Through ChatGPT, the inDM plugin can:

  • Draft and check an automation before you sign in to anything.
  • List your connected Instagram accounts and your recent posts and reels, and pull in a post you published moments ago.
  • Create an automation on a post as a draft, edit it, and set it live or pause it.
  • Report how many times it triggered and how many messages were sent, delivered and failed, as totals.
  • Work out why an account went quiet: whether Instagram paused the connection, whether messages are waiting to go out, and which errors Instagram sent back recently.

The listing shows three starter prompts, among them "Draft an Instagram automation that DMs my link when someone comments LINK" and "Why did nobody get the DM from my latest reel?". The automations run on inDM, not in ChatGPT, so they keep answering comments whether or not the chat is open.

To go beyond drafting, you need an inDM account with an Instagram professional account connected inside inDM, through Meta's own login. ChatGPT never sees your Instagram password. The inDM plugin works on inDM's free plan. The full picture of what ChatGPT can and cannot automate on Instagram is in can ChatGPT automate Instagram comment-to-DM.

What does a post-then-reply routine look like?

Write the caption with ChatGPT, publish the post, then have the inDM plugin set up the reply to the comments it earns. The routine has four steps:

  1. Write the post. Ask ChatGPT for the caption, and for the keyword you will ask people to comment, such as LINK.
  2. Publish it. Post it in Instagram yourself, or through one of the posting plugins above.
  3. Pull it in. In the inDM plugin, ask ChatGPT to find the post you have published and create a draft automation on it, with your keyword, your public reply, your DM and your link.
  4. Read the draft, then set it live. Every automation starts as a draft, so nothing goes out until you say so.

From then on inDM sends exactly the message you approved to each person who comments the keyword. No AI writes replies to fans as they arrive. For the setup in the inDM app instead of a chat, here is the comment-to-DM setup guide.

Where this stops working

  • The inDM plugin does not post. It cannot publish, schedule or edit a post, and it does not make Reels.
  • The inDM plugin cannot send messages through ChatGPT. No DM, broadcast or public reply leaves through the connection. Only an automation you have set live sends anything, and only to people who commented. It also cannot read what anyone wrote to you or what you wrote back, and it looks people up one exact handle at a time.
  • Instagram's rules apply to every tool. A comment earns one private reply, sent within 7 days. Every message after that needs the person to reply first, inside the 24-hour messaging window.
  • Personal accounts are out. Official comment-to-DM works on Business and Creator accounts only.
  • We tested no posting plugin. What each one can do comes from its own listing, so read the listing and the permissions screen before you approve a connection.
  • A brand-new post may need pulling in. A reel published seconds ago can take a moment to appear, which ChatGPT can ask inDM to fetch.

ChatGPT can help you write the post, you can publish it however you prefer, and the inDM plugin can answer every comment it earns.
