Yes, a ChatGPT app can automate Instagram comment-to-DM, and inDM is a plugin inside ChatGPT built to do exactly that. You describe the automation in a conversation and inDM runs it. ChatGPT only acts while you are talking to it, so the automation lives on inDM, which Instagram notifies the moment someone comments.

This page explains what a ChatGPT app can and cannot do with Instagram, how the inDM plugin builds a comment-to-DM automation from a conversation, and the one question that tells a working setup from one that stops when you close the tab. Everything here was checked on 27 October 2026.

What is a ChatGPT app?

A ChatGPT app is a connection between ChatGPT and an outside service, which lets ChatGPT read from that service and act in it while you talk. OpenAI's developer documentation calls them plugins, a way to "connect your tools and services to ChatGPT". You find one in ChatGPT's plugin directory, connect it once, and from then on you can ask ChatGPT to use it in plain words. Under the hood, many are built on a shared standard, explained in what an Instagram MCP server is.

A ChatGPT app gives ChatGPT no new power over Instagram on its own. It gives ChatGPT access to whatever the service behind it can do. If that service runs Instagram automations, ChatGPT can set them up. If the service only schedules posts, scheduling posts is all ChatGPT can do through it. For that side of the job, see can ChatGPT post on Instagram.

Why can't ChatGPT run comment-to-DM by itself?

ChatGPT cannot run comment-to-DM by itself because it only acts when you send it a message, and a fan can comment at 3am. Comment-to-DM needs something awake at the moment of the comment. Instagram tells an approved DM tool the moment someone comments on your post, and the tool answers with a private reply. Meta's rule is that only one message can be sent to the commenter, within 7 days of the comment.

ChatGPT is not that tool. A conversation starts when you type and ends when you stop. Nothing in ChatGPT keeps watching your reels after you close the tab, and Instagram does not send your comments to ChatGPT.

So every working setup has two halves:

  • The DM tool runs the automation. It connects to Instagram through Meta's own login, it hears about every comment, and it sends the DM. It keeps going when ChatGPT is closed.
  • The ChatGPT app is how you talk to that tool. You describe the automation, check how it is doing, and find out why a fan did not get a message, all without opening a dashboard.

What one question tells you whether a ChatGPT app can automate Instagram?

Ask what keeps running after you close ChatGPT. If the answer is a DM tool connected to Instagram through Meta's login, the ChatGPT app can automate comment-to-DM. If the answer is nothing, the app can help you write messages, but it cannot send them to the people who comment.

Then run the same three checks you would run on any Instagram tool:

  1. Does the DM tool connect through Instagram's own login? A tool that asks for your Instagram password is the unofficial kind, and it is against Instagram's terms. Here is how to tell an official DM bot from the other kind.
  2. Does it need a professional account? Official comment-to-DM works on Business and Creator accounts only.
  3. Does it say what it cannot do? Read the permissions screen before you approve the connection. A good one lists its limits as plainly as its features.

How does the inDM plugin automate comment-to-DM in ChatGPT?

The inDM plugin turns a request like "DM my link to anyone who comments LINK on my latest reel" into a comment-to-DM automation on your inDM account, saved as a draft until you set it live. The automation then runs on inDM, not in ChatGPT, so it keeps answering comments whether or not the conversation is open.

Here is what that looks like in a conversation:

  1. Try it before connecting anything. Ask ChatGPT to draft an automation. inDM's app checks the keyword, the button label, the message and the link, and names anything that would stop the automation firing. This step needs no account.
  2. Connect inDM. Find inDM in ChatGPT's plugin directory, connect it, and sign in with your inDM account. A screen titled "ChatGPT wants to connect to your inDM" lists what the connection can and cannot do before you approve it. Every click is in how to connect ChatGPT to Instagram.
  3. Pick the post. ChatGPT lists your recent posts and reels. If you published a reel a minute ago, ask ChatGPT to pull it in.
  4. Create the draft. The keyword, the public reply, the DM, the button and the link are saved on your inDM account. Nothing goes out yet.
  5. Set it live. Say so in the conversation, or switch it on in the inDM app. From then on inDM answers every matching comment by itself.

Afterwards, the same conversation answers the questions that usually mean opening a dashboard:

  • "How is my LINK automation doing?" How many times it triggered, how many messages went out, how many were delivered and how many failed.
  • "Why did nobody get the DM from my latest reel?" Whether Instagram has paused your connection and why, whether messages are waiting to go out, and which errors Instagram sent back recently.
  • "Did this person get my DM?" For one person, by their exact Instagram handle: whether they triggered the automation and whether the message reached them.

You need an inDM account with your Instagram professional account connected inside inDM. Instagram access is granted there, through Meta's own login, so ChatGPT never sees your Instagram password. The inDM plugin works on inDM's free plan, and pricing lists what Growth adds.

What can't the inDM plugin do?

The inDM plugin cannot send a message, read your inbox or list your followers, and each of those limits is deliberate. No DM, broadcast or public reply leaves through the ChatGPT connection. Only an automation you have set live sends anything, and it only sends to people who commented.

The full list of what the connection cannot do:

  • Send a DM, a broadcast or a public comment reply.
  • Read what anyone wrote to you, or what you wrote back.
  • Browse, list or export your followers. It looks people up one exact handle at a time.
  • Touch your billing, or see a workspace you do not belong to.

Other tools draw this line in a different place. Inrō's guide, dated 16 July 2026, says its connection gives Claude or ChatGPT more than 25 tools, can send a message, and has ChatGPT support in beta. Both designs are reasonable. ManyChat takes a third route, with AI inside its own product: see does ManyChat work with ChatGPT. Choose which side of the line you want before you connect, because whatever a ChatGPT app can do, ChatGPT will do when you ask.

Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your Instagram automation?

Connecting ChatGPT to an official DM tool is as safe as the tool itself, because ChatGPT never receives your Instagram login. Instagram access stays with the DM tool, granted through Meta's own screen, and ChatGPT only reaches what that tool chooses to share.

For inDM, that means your connected accounts, your posts and reels, your automations and their totals. Our privacy policy sets out exactly what is shared with OpenAI while an assistant is answering you, and what never is. You can disconnect inDM from ChatGPT's own settings at any time, and your automations keep running in inDM. The full list of what an assistant can and cannot see is in can ChatGPT read your Instagram DMs, and the account side is in is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your Instagram.

Can ChatGPT write the DM for me?

Yes, ChatGPT can draft the DM, and with inDM's app you read it before it is saved. That is different from AI answering your fans. inDM sends the exact message you approved to every person who comments the keyword, and no AI writes replies to fans as they arrive. Instagram has its own AI auto-replies for some professional accounts, covered in AI tools for Instagram. For help with hooks and captions, start with these ChatGPT prompts for Instagram.

Where this stops working

  • ChatGPT does not change Instagram's rules. A comment earns one private reply, sent within 7 days. Every message after that needs the person to reply first, inside the 24-hour messaging window. The full picture: is Instagram DM automation allowed.
  • ChatGPT sees what inDM has synced. A reel published seconds ago may not show up until inDM pulls it in, which ChatGPT can ask for.
  • ChatGPT can misread a request. Read the draft before you set it live. That is the reason every automation starts as a draft.
  • Personal accounts are out. Official comment-to-DM needs a Business or Creator account, in ChatGPT or anywhere else.
  • ChatGPT is optional. The same automation takes a few minutes in the inDM app. Here is the comment-to-DM setup guide.

Describe the automation once, check on it whenever you like, and let it answer every comment while you make the next reel.
