Can ChatGPT connect to Instagram?

Yes, but only through a plugin. ChatGPT has no login of its own for Instagram, and it never needs your Instagram password. A plugin is a connection between ChatGPT and an outside service. OpenAI's developer documentation describes plugins as a way to "connect your tools and services to ChatGPT". You add one from ChatGPT's plugin directory, approve it once, and from then on you can ask ChatGPT to use it in plain words.

The service behind the plugin holds the connection to Instagram. ChatGPT reaches only what that service chooses to share. That is why the answer to "how do I connect ChatGPT to Instagram" depends on the job: each plugin connects for one job, and the inDM plugin connects for comment-to-DM.

What do you need before you install the inDM plugin?

You need an inDM account at app.indm.social with an Instagram professional account connected inside it. A professional account is a Business or Creator account, and here is what that means. You connect it inside inDM through Meta's own login screen, which is Instagram's official way of granting access. ChatGPT never sees your Instagram password at any point.

Official comment-to-DM automation works on professional accounts only, in ChatGPT or anywhere else. A personal account has to be switched to Business or Creator first.

One part works earlier than the rest. Asking ChatGPT to draft an automation works before you sign in to anything, so you can see what the plugin does before you connect an account. The inDM plugin works on inDM's free plan, and pricing lists what Growth adds.

How do you connect ChatGPT to Instagram step by step?

Open Plugins in ChatGPT's left sidebar, install inDM, sign in with your inDM account and approve the connection. The steps, in order:

  1. Open Plugins in ChatGPT's left sidebar.
  2. Type "inDM" into Search plugins and open the inDM result. The listing is by inDM and sits in the Business & Operations category.
  3. Press Install plugin.
  4. Sign in with your inDM account. A screen titled "ChatGPT wants to connect to your inDM" lists what the connection can see and do, and what it can never do, before you approve. Read it, then approve.
  5. Back in ChatGPT, the plugin page shows Manage and Try in chat. Press Try in chat, or pick one of the starter prompts.

We installed the plugin on a ChatGPT account on the Free plan on 27 October 2026 and it worked. We did not check other plans, so look for inDM on your own Plugins page.

What does the approval screen show?

The "ChatGPT wants to connect to your inDM" screen lists what the connection can see and do, and what it can never do. In plain words, once approved, the inDM plugin can:

  • Draft and check an automation, and explain Instagram's rules, such as the 24-hour messaging window and the three-link ceiling Meta sets.
  • List your connected accounts and recent posts and reels, and pull in a post you published moments ago.
  • Create an automation on a post as a draft, edit it, and set it live or pause it.
  • Report how many times an automation triggered, sent, delivered and failed, as totals.
  • Work out why an account went quiet: whether Instagram paused the connection, whether messages are waiting to go out, and which errors Instagram sent back recently.
  • Look up one person by exact handle, to say whether they triggered the automation and whether the message reached them.

By design, the inDM plugin cannot send a DM, a broadcast or a public reply. It cannot read what anyone wrote to you or what you wrote back, browse or export your followers, or touch your billing. It cannot see an account you have not connected, or a workspace you are not a member of.

What should you try first once inDM is connected?

Start with the three prompts on the plugin's listing. They show the three jobs the plugin does: build, diagnose and explain.

  1. "Draft an Instagram automation that DMs my link when someone comments LINK." ChatGPT checks the keyword, the message and the link, names anything that would stop it firing, and saves the automation as a draft. Nothing goes out until you set it live.
  2. "Why did nobody get the DM from my latest reel?" The plugin checks whether Instagram paused your connection, whether messages are waiting to go out, and which errors Instagram returned recently.
  3. "What is the 24-hour Instagram messaging window?" ChatGPT explains the rule that every message after the first needs the person to reply first, inside 24 hours.

The automation itself runs on inDM, not in ChatGPT. It keeps answering comments whether or not the conversation is open. inDM sends exactly the message you approved, and no AI writes replies to your fans.

Is there a ChatGPT Instagram connector?

The nearest thing to a ChatGPT Instagram connector is a plugin, and the directory lists several, each for a different job. We searched ChatGPT's plugin directory for "instagram" from a signed-in account on 27 October 2026. The listings fell into four groups. The descriptions below are each vendor's own listing text, and we did not test any of them.

  • Posting and scheduling. The listing for Instagram & TikTok by 1Social says it schedules and posts to Instagram and other networks from a single message, up to 30 days ahead. Several other listings describe scheduling or publishing posts too. For what Instagram itself allows, see can you schedule Instagram posts.
  • Analytics. Windsor.ai Instagram, Socialinsider and Reelyze list analysis of how your Instagram content performs.
  • Managing comments and DMs in chat. The listing for Buzzfy says it connects through Instagram's official API, drafts replies, shows a preview, and acts only after you approve.
  • DM automation. inDM, SlideDM and Reachlee list comment and DM automation.

Pick by the job you need done. The inDM plugin is for comment-to-DM: a fan comments a keyword, and inDM sends the DM you wrote. Behind the plugin is inDM's Instagram MCP server, at https://api.indm.social/mcp. Because the plugin is in the directory, you install it without Developer Mode and never paste that address.

How do you disconnect ChatGPT from Instagram?

Press Manage on the inDM plugin's page in ChatGPT, or use ChatGPT's own settings, and the connection ends. Disconnecting ends the sharing, not the service. Your automations keep running in inDM, answering comments, until you pause them.

Never type your Instagram password into ChatGPT or any tool that asks for it. A tool that asks is the unofficial kind, and here is how to tell an official DM bot from the other kind.

Where this stops working

  • The plugin does not change Instagram's rules. A comment earns one private reply, sent within 7 days. Every message after that needs the person to reply first, inside the 24-hour messaging window.
  • Personal accounts are out. Official comment-to-DM needs a Business or Creator account, which is why the connection inside inDM comes first.
  • One plugin does one job. A posting plugin does not run comment-to-DM, and the inDM plugin does not schedule posts.
  • ChatGPT can misread a request. Read the draft before you set it live. That is the reason every automation starts as a draft.
  • ChatGPT is optional. The same automation takes a few minutes in the inDM app, with no plugin at all.

Connect the plugin once, describe what you want in plain words, and let the automation answer every comment while you make the next reel.
