Instagram MCP server for ChatGPT
inDM's MCP server is in ChatGPT's plugin directory. Install it free, with no Developer Mode and nothing to paste, and build comment-to-DM automations by asking.
inDM has an Instagram MCP server, and ChatGPT reaches it as the inDM plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory. You install it from Plugins, sign in to inDM, and then draft, check, set live and debug Instagram comment-to-DM automations by asking. It works on ChatGPT's Free plan and on inDM's free plan. The server address is https://api.indm.social/mcp.
The automations run on inDM, not inside the chat, so they keep answering comments after you close ChatGPT. Nothing sends through the connection itself. Every automation it creates starts as a draft, and you choose when it goes live.
How do you install inDM in ChatGPT?
From ChatGPT's Plugins page, in about a minute. You need an inDM account with an Instagram Business or Creator account connected inside it, which you do through Meta's own login.
- Open Plugins in ChatGPT's left sidebar.
- Type "inDM" into Search plugins and open the inDM listing. It sits in the Business & Operations category.
- Press Install plugin.
- Sign in with your inDM account. A screen titled "ChatGPT wants to connect to your inDM" lists what the connection can and cannot do. Read it, then approve.
- Press Try in chat, or pick a starter prompt.
Drafting an automation and asking about Instagram's rules both work before you sign in, so you can see what the plugin does first. The longer walk-through, including what the approval screen shows, is how to connect ChatGPT to Instagram.
Do you need Developer Mode or a server address?
No. inDM is listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory, so it installs like any other plugin. An MCP server that is not in the directory has to be added as a custom connector, and in ChatGPT that means switching on Developer Mode, a setting OpenAI does not offer on every plan.
The address is published so you can see exactly what the plugin connects to. It signs you in through your inDM account with OAuth, never with an API key or a password.
What can you ask it to do?
The plugin has twelve tools. In plain words, they do these things:
- Draft and check an automation before you sign in to anything. It names whatever would stop it firing.
- Explain the rules of Instagram and inDM: the 24-hour messaging window, how keyword matching works, the three-link ceiling Meta sets, follow-up timing, and the follow and email gates.
- List your connected accounts and recent posts and reels, and pull in a post you published moments ago.
- Create an automation on a post as a draft, edit it, and set it live or pause it.
- Report results as totals: how many times an automation triggered, and how many messages were sent, delivered and failed.
- Diagnose a quiet account: whether Instagram paused the connection, whether messages are waiting to go out, and which errors Instagram sent back recently.
- Look up one person by exact handle: whether they triggered the automation and whether the message reached them.
Three prompts to start with:
- "Draft an Instagram automation that DMs my link when someone comments LINK"
- "Why did nobody get the DM from my latest reel?"
- "What is the 24-hour Instagram messaging window?"
The whole flow, from a request in chat to a live automation, is in can ChatGPT apps automate Instagram comment-to-DM.
What can it never do?
The connection sets up and checks automations, and it stops there.
- It cannot send a DM, a broadcast or a public reply. Only your live automations send, and they send the words you approved.
- It cannot read what anyone wrote to you, or the email addresses you have collected.
- It cannot browse, list or export your followers. It looks up one handle you give it.
- It cannot touch your billing, or any workspace you are not part of.
inDM has no AI-written replies. ChatGPT helps you build the automation, and the message your audience receives is the one you wrote.
Is it safe to connect?
Yes, because ChatGPT never connects to Instagram directly. Your Instagram account connects to inDM through Meta's own login, so neither inDM nor ChatGPT sees your Instagram password, and ChatGPT reaches only what inDM's tools return. inDM is an approved Meta Tech Provider. Approval means Meta reviewed the app and granted it permissions. It is not an endorsement.
To disconnect, press Manage on the inDM plugin's page in ChatGPT, or use ChatGPT's own settings. Your automations keep running in inDM until you pause them. Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your Instagram shows how to spot an unsafe connection, and what an Instagram MCP server is explains the term itself.
Where this stops working
The plugin manages automations. It does not change what Instagram allows them to do.
- We installed it on ChatGPT's Free plan and did not check other plans, so look for inDM on your own Plugins page.
- Automations need an Instagram Business or Creator account. A personal account has to switch first, and switching is free.
- An automation answers people who commented first. It cannot DM someone for following you, or message people who never contacted you.
- Your plan's limits apply in ChatGPT too, such as the automation limit on Free. Pricing lists what Growth adds.

Questions, answered plainly
Does inDM have an MCP server?
Yes. inDM's MCP server is at https://api.indm.social/mcp, and ChatGPT reaches it as the inDM plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory. You install the plugin from Plugins, sign in to inDM, and build and check Instagram comment-to-DM automations by asking.
Do I need Developer Mode to use inDM in ChatGPT?
No. inDM is listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory, so you install it from the Plugins page like any other plugin. Developer Mode is only needed for an MCP server that is not in the directory, which has to be added as a custom connector.
Is the inDM plugin free?
Yes. The plugin works on inDM's free plan, which is $0 forever with no card, and we installed it on ChatGPT's Free plan. Your inDM plan's limits apply in ChatGPT too, and the pricing page lists what Growth adds.
Can ChatGPT send DMs through inDM?
No. Nothing sends through the connection. Every automation it creates starts as a draft, and only your live automations send, with the words you approved. It cannot send a broadcast or a public reply, and it cannot read anyone's messages.
Do my automations stop when I close ChatGPT?
No. The automations run on inDM, not in the chat, so they keep answering comments after you close ChatGPT or disconnect the plugin. Pause them from the plugin or the inDM app to stop them.
