An Instagram MCP server is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as ChatGPT work with an Instagram account, and inDM runs one for comment-to-DM that you install from ChatGPT's plugin directory, with no Developer Mode and no address to paste. Meta's own list of official MCP servers, read on 27 October 2026, has none for Instagram posts, comments or DMs, so third parties build them. inDM's plugin in ChatGPT is built on inDM's MCP server, which uses Instagram's official API.
This page explains what the term means in plain words, what Meta has and has not released, how to tell a safe Instagram connection from a risky one, and what the inDM plugin does with it. Everything here was checked on 27 October 2026.
What is an Instagram MCP server?
An Instagram MCP server is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude work with an Instagram account when you ask it to. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Its own site describes it as "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems", and compares it to "a USB-C port for AI applications".
The comparison is a good one. A USB-C port means any device can plug into any cable that fits. MCP does the same for assistants and services: a service builds one connector, and every assistant that supports the standard can use it. ChatGPT and Claude both support it.
A connector of this kind offers the assistant a short list of tools, which are actions the assistant may ask for, such as "list my recent posts" or "check this automation". You ask in plain words, the assistant picks the right tool, and the service does the work.
How do you use an Instagram MCP server in ChatGPT?
In ChatGPT you do not set up the server yourself, because you install a plugin that is built from one. OpenAI's developer documentation says plugins "combine skills, MCP servers, and optional interfaces to connect your tools and services to ChatGPT". The plugin is the part you see. The MCP server is the part that does the work behind it.
Installing the inDM plugin shows how little there is to do:
- In ChatGPT's left sidebar, open Plugins.
- Type "inDM" into Search plugins and open the inDM result.
- Press Install plugin.
- Sign in with your inDM account. A screen titled "ChatGPT wants to connect to your inDM" lists what the connection can see and do, and what it can never do, before you approve.
- Press Try in chat, or pick one of the starter prompts.
Is there an official Instagram MCP server?
No. Meta publishes official MCP servers, and none of the three on its list runs an Instagram account's posts, comments or DMs. Meta's page "Connect AI Agents to Meta with MCP", updated on 12 June 2026, lists three official remote servers:
- Meta Ads MCP manages Meta ads: campaign performance, creating and editing ads, campaigns, catalogs and experiments.
- Meta Social Technologies MCP is for developers managing the Meta apps and integrations they build. It was formerly called Meta Developer Tools MCP.
- WhatsApp Business Tools MCP manages a WhatsApp Business Platform integration, including sending messages.
Meta lists ChatGPT on the web, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex and Cursor among the assistants that can connect to them. The honest wording is "not on Meta's list on 27 October 2026", not "never". Meta can add servers, so check that page before you rely on this one.
Who builds the Instagram MCP servers that do exist?
Third parties build them, and they split into two groups: connectors built on Instagram's official API, and connectors that are not. Several community projects exist. Some use Instagram's official API, which means you connect through Meta's own login and Meta decides what the connector may do.
The other group is the risk. Inrō's guide, dated 16 July 2026, warns that some open-source Instagram servers drive a browser or scrape the app, which breaks Instagram's terms. The account that gets connected is yours, so the tool's method matters as much as its features. We do not name individual projects here, because the method is what you check, not the brand.
How can you tell whether an Instagram MCP server is safe?
Check five things before you approve any Instagram connection: how it reaches Instagram, which account type it needs, what it says it cannot do, whether it reads message content, and how you disconnect.
- Does it use Instagram's official API? The right answer is Meta's own login screen. A connector that asks for your Instagram password, or runs a browser as you, is the unofficial kind. Here is how to tell an official DM bot from the other kind, and the wider checklist in is it safe to connect Instagram to a third-party app.
- Does it need a professional account? Official automation works on Business and Creator accounts only. A connector promising to automate a personal account is not using the official route.
- Does it say what it cannot do? Read the approval screen. A good one lists its limits as plainly as its features.
- Does it read message content? Meta's own safety advice on its MCP page is that AI agents can be manipulated by hidden instructions in content they read. Fewer things read means fewer places for hidden instructions to sit. Choose a connector that reads only what its job needs.
- Can you switch it off? Meta advises keeping access at Read unless an agent needs to change things, and revoking connections you no longer use. The same habit works for any Instagram connector.
Is the inDM plugin an Instagram MCP server?
Yes. The inDM plugin in ChatGPT is built on an MCP server, at https://api.indm.social/mcp, and it is made for one job: comment-to-DM. You connect your Instagram professional account to inDM through Meta's own login, so ChatGPT never sees your Instagram password. The automations then run on inDM, not in ChatGPT, so they keep answering comments whether or not the chat is open. The plugin works on inDM's free plan, and pricing lists what Growth adds.
The plugin has twelve tools. In plain words, they do these things:
- Draft and check an automation before you sign in to anything. It names whatever would stop it firing.
- Explain the rules of Instagram and inDM: the 24-hour messaging window, how keyword matching works, the three-link ceiling Meta sets, follow-up timing, and the follow and email gates.
- List your connected accounts and recent posts and reels, and pull in a post published moments ago.
- Create an automation on a post as a draft, edit it, and set it live or pause it. Read the draft before you set it live.
- Report results as totals: how many times it triggered, and how many messages were sent, delivered and failed.
- Diagnose a quiet account: whether Instagram paused the connection, whether messages are waiting to go out, and which errors Instagram sent back recently.
- Look up one person by exact handle: whether they triggered the automation and whether the message reached them.
The plugin cannot do the rest, by design. It cannot send a DM, a broadcast or a public reply. It cannot read what anyone wrote to you or what you wrote back, because it reads no message content at all. It cannot browse, list or export your followers, touch your billing, or see an account you have not connected. inDM sends exactly the message you approved, and no AI writes replies to your fans.
If you want to see the whole flow, from a request in chat to a live automation, read can ChatGPT apps automate Instagram comment-to-DM. What the automation itself does is explained in comment-to-DM.
Where this stops working
- A connector cannot change Instagram's rules. A comment earns one private reply, and every message after that needs the person to reply first. The full picture is in is Instagram DM automation allowed.
- Meta's list can change. The three official servers are what Meta listed on 27 October 2026, on a page last updated on 12 June 2026.
- A plugin only reaches what the service behind it offers. The inDM plugin runs comment-to-DM and nothing else. It does not post, schedule or write captions.
- Personal accounts are out. Official comment-to-DM needs a Business or Creator account, through any connector.
- You still decide. The plugin drafts and reports, and you set an automation live. Read what a connector will do before you approve it.
Pick a connector that does one job, uses Meta's own login, says what it cannot do, and keeps answering comments after you close the chat.
