No. ChatGPT on its own cannot see your Instagram DMs, your posts or your reels, because nothing connects the two. A plugin can connect them, and what it reads depends entirely on the plugin. inDM is a plugin inside ChatGPT that reads no message content at all: not what your fans wrote to you, and not what you wrote back.

This page is about privacy and access: what ChatGPT can reach on Instagram, what changes when you connect a plugin, exactly what the inDM plugin shares with OpenAI, and how to disconnect. Everything here was checked on 27 October 2026. For how the connection works from a request in chat to a live automation, read can ChatGPT apps automate Instagram comment-to-DM.

Can ChatGPT read your Instagram DMs on its own?

No, ChatGPT cannot read your Instagram DMs on its own, because it has no connection to your Instagram account. Instagram does not send your messages to ChatGPT, and nothing in ChatGPT logs in to your account. Your DMs, your followers and your reels are not visible to it.

You can still paste a message into a chat. That is you sharing it, not ChatGPT reading your account, and what you type into a conversation is a conversation with OpenAI. The rest of this page is about the other way in: a plugin you choose to connect.

Can ChatGPT access Instagram or see your reels?

ChatGPT can access Instagram only through a plugin, and only the parts that plugin is built to reach. Searching ChatGPT's plugin directory for "instagram" from a signed-in account on 27 October 2026 returned plugins in four groups. These are the vendors' own listing descriptions. We did not test any of them.

  • Posting and scheduling. Their listings describe scheduling and publishing posts. "Instagram & TikTok by 1Social" is one: its listing says it schedules and posts to several networks from a single message.
  • Analytics. Windsor.ai Instagram, Socialinsider and Reelyze are listed here. Reelyze describes itself as a way to "find why reels lose viewers".
  • Instagram management in chat. Buzzfy is listed here.
  • DM automation. inDM, SlideDM and Reachlee are listed here.

So the honest answer to "is ChatGPT connected to Instagram?" is that ChatGPT is not, and some plugins inside it are. With the inDM plugin, ChatGPT can list your connected accounts and your recent posts and reels, so you can pick the reel an automation belongs to. It does not read what anyone wrote to you.

What does a plugin read, and why does it differ?

What a plugin reads depends entirely on how its maker built it, and two Instagram plugins can sit at opposite ends. Buzzfy's listing says it connects through Instagram's official API, reads your comments and DMs and drafts replies. It says it shows a preview and only replies, sends, hides, publishes or schedules after you approve.

The inDM plugin is built the other way. By design it reads no message content at all. It cannot see what anyone wrote to you or what you wrote back. It can tell you whether one person triggered an automation and whether the message reached them, and it cannot tell you a word of what was said.

Both are reasonable designs for different jobs. A plugin that drafts replies has to read messages. A plugin that runs comment-to-DM automations does not. Choose by what the job needs, because whatever a plugin can read, it can pass to the assistant while you talk.

What exactly does the inDM plugin share with OpenAI?

While an assistant is answering you, the inDM plugin shares four kinds of information with OpenAI. inDM's privacy policy lists them:

  • Your connected Instagram accounts and their health.
  • Your published posts and reels.
  • Your automations and how they are configured.
  • Totals such as how many times an automation triggered, and how many messages were delivered or failed.

For a one-person lookup, the plugin returns whether that person triggered an automation and whether a message reached them. It returns not a word of what was written.

What does the inDM plugin never share?

The inDM plugin never shares five things: your inDM password, your Instagram credentials, your followers, your contact list or anything anyone wrote.

  • Your inDM password. You sign in on inDM's own screen, and ChatGPT never receives the password.
  • Your Instagram credentials. You connect Instagram to inDM through Meta's own login, so ChatGPT never sees your Instagram password.
  • Your followers. The plugin cannot browse, list or export them. It looks people up one exact handle at a time.
  • Your contact list.
  • Anything anyone wrote. No message content passes through the connection, in either direction.

The plugin also cannot send a DM, a broadcast or a public reply, touch your billing, or see an account you have not connected. inDM sends exactly the message you approved, and no AI writes replies to your fans.

Who governs the data once it reaches OpenAI?

Once information is sent to OpenAI, OpenAI's privacy policy governs it. inDM's promise covers what inDM sends and what it never sends. It cannot change what OpenAI's policy says about what OpenAI receives. Read OpenAI's policy alongside inDM's before you connect, because together they cover the whole path.

The automations themselves run on inDM, not in ChatGPT. They keep answering comments whether or not the chat is open, which is why the connection only ever needs to share setup and totals.

How do you disconnect the inDM plugin from ChatGPT?

Press Manage on the inDM plugin's page in ChatGPT, or use ChatGPT's own settings. Disconnecting ends the sharing. It does not end the service, so your automations keep running in inDM until you pause them. You can pause an automation in the inDM app, or from the plugin before you disconnect it.

What should you check on any plugin's screen before you approve?

Read the approval screen for what the plugin can see, what it can do and what it can never do, and approve only when all three match the job. The inDM plugin's screen is titled "ChatGPT wants to connect to your inDM" and lists all three before you press approve. Whatever plugin you consider, check these:

  1. How it reaches Instagram. It should use Meta's own login. A plugin that asks for your Instagram password is the unofficial kind. Here is the wider checklist: is it safe to connect Instagram to a third-party app.
  2. Whether it reads message content. If its listing says it reads your DMs, you are handing those conversations to an assistant. If it says it reads none, that is the smaller exposure.
  3. Whether it can act without asking. Look for a preview and an approval step before anything is sent or published, or a plugin that cannot send at all.
  4. Whether the screen names its limits. A good one says what it can never do in the same words as what it can.
  5. Which account type it needs. Official automation works on Business and Creator accounts only.
  6. How you disconnect. Find the Manage button, or the setting, before you approve.

Where this stops working

  • We read listing text and did not test other plugins. Buzzfy's description above is its own. A plugin's listing can change, so read the current one before you connect.
  • OpenAI's policy is outside inDM's control. inDM states what it sends. What happens to it afterwards is governed by OpenAI.
  • The assistant does see your setup and totals. Your connected accounts, posts, automations and totals pass to OpenAI while an assistant is answering you. That is the whole list, and it is not nothing.
  • Anything you type is shared too. If you paste a fan's message into the chat, it is part of your conversation with OpenAI, whichever plugin you use.
  • Personal accounts are out. Official comment-to-DM needs a Business or Creator account, in ChatGPT or anywhere else.

Connect a plugin only when you know exactly what it reads, and you can undo it in one press.
