Yes. As of August 2026, at least eight Instagram DM automation tools ship a free tier that never expires — CreatorFlow, LinkDM, ReplyRush, InstantDM, SuperProfile, GRO.co, Zorcha and Chatfuel among them. What differs is not whether free exists, but what each plan meters: DMs sent, contacts, AI credits, or your follower count.
That last part is why "which one is free" is the wrong question and almost every roundup answers it anyway. Six of these plans cost nothing and are still not comparable, because no two of them count the same thing. Below is what each free tier actually includes, read off the vendors' own pricing pages with the date we read them.
Which Instagram DM automation tools have a free tier?
Eight do, on terms that don't expire. Two more have a free tier too small to run anything on, and two have none for Instagram DM automation at all.
| Tool | Free tier | What it meters | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| SuperProfile | $0 forever — AutoDMs on Reels and Posts with no stated cap, 10 leads | Leads captured | 2026-08-08 |
| GRO.co | $0 — free for accounts below 15K followers, Instagram only, unlimited posts, no card | Your follower count | 2026-08-12 |
| ReplyRush | $0 — 1,500 DMs/mo, 1 Instagram + 1 Facebook. No comment auto-reply, no follow gate | DMs sent | 2026-08-08 |
| LinkDM | $0 — 1,000 DMs/mo, 1 Instagram account, LinkDM branding on | DMs sent | 2026-08-08 |
| CreatorFlow | $0 — 500 DMs/mo | DMs sent | 2026-08-04 |
| InstantDM | $0 — 500 DMs/mo, Reels and Story automation | DMs sent | 2026-08-12 |
| Zorcha | $0 — 15,000 AI credits, 3 automations, DMs uncapped | AI credits | 2026-08-08 |
| Chatfuel | Chatfuel Light — free, no card, Instagram/Facebook/WhatsApp automations | Not published | 2026-08-08 |
| Inro | €0 — 100 contacts activated/mo | Contacts | 2026-08-04 |
| ManyChat | $0 — 25 active contacts/mo | Contacts | 2026-08-04 |
| BotPenguin | Free forever — 1,000 messages/mo, but Instagram DM automation starts on the $29/mo plan | Messages, all channels | 2026-08-08 |
| Spur | None. Cheapest plan is $12/mo | — | 2026-08-08 |
Two entries in that table are the useful ones, because they are the two nobody writes down. BotPenguin's free plan exists and does not include Instagram DM automation — that starts at $29/mo. And Spur has no free tier at all. A roundup that lists twelve tools and marks ten of them "free" is counting plan names, not capability.
What does a free DM automation tier actually cost you?
Usually one of four things, and it is worth knowing which before you build a funnel on it.
Their name on your DM. LinkDM's free plan carries LinkDM branding; ReplyRush keeps its branding through the $10 tier and removes it at $25; GRO.co removes branding on the $30 plan. This is the most common price of free in the category, and it is charged in the one place your audience is actually looking — the message that arrives from you.
A ceiling you hit on a good day. 500 DMs a month is roughly one reel that does well. The free tiers are sized for a quiet month, which means the day the automation earns its keep is the day it stops.
The trigger you needed, missing. ReplyRush's free plan has no comment auto-reply and no follow gate. Comment-to-DM is the single most common reason to want one of these tools, so a free plan without it is free in the way a car without wheels is cheap.
A cap that is real but written as "unlimited." InstantDM's $9.99 plan is described as unlimited automation, and its own comparison table qualifies that as 750 per hour. That figure is not a product limit — 750 private replies per hour per account is Instagram's own documented ceiling, which every tool on this page is subject to whether or not it says so. It is fair to say their "unlimited" is the platform's number restated. It is not fair for anyone, us included, to promise past it.
Why can't you compare two free tiers directly?
Because six of them meter six different things, and there is no exchange rate between them.
- DMs sent — CreatorFlow, InstantDM, LinkDM, ReplyRush. Every message the tool sends on your behalf counts.
- Contacts — ManyChat, Inro. One person costs the same whether you exchange one message or forty, and the count resets monthly.
- AI credits — Zorcha. DMs are uncapped; the meter runs on the AI features instead.
- Messages across every channel — BotPenguin. Your Instagram volume shares a budget with WhatsApp and web chat.
- Your follower count — GRO.co. Free below 15K followers, then priced in audience bands up to 3M.
- Leads captured — SuperProfile. The sends aren't the meter; the people are.
A "1,000 DMs" allowance and a "100 contacts" allowance are not two sizes of the same thing. Under the two-message opt-in flow that Instagram requires for links, one converted comment costs two DMs — an opener, then the link after the person taps. So 1,000 DMs is around 500 conversations, while 100 contacts is 100 people no matter how much they message you. Work out which unit your own use case is denominated in before comparing any two numbers on this page.
Which free tier fits what you are doing?
Match the meter to the shape of your account, not the headline.
- Under 15K followers and posting consistently — GRO.co's free plan is unmetered on volume and priced on the one number you're trying to grow. That is a good deal now and a decision to revisit at 15K.
- One reel a month that does well — a DM-metered free tier will hold. 500 to 1,500 DMs covers a couple of hundred conversations.
- A small, chatty audience you talk to a lot — a contact-metered tier is the better shape, because forty messages to one person costs the same as one.
- You need comment-to-DM specifically — check that the free tier includes it. ReplyRush's does not, and it is the most common reason people arrive here.
- You need Instagram DM automation from a multi-channel tool — check it is on the free plan at all. BotPenguin's is not.
Where does inDM sit?
We have a free plan that doesn't expire — 1,000 DMs a month, no card — as of 2026-08-12. The honest note is that it's new, and several tools in the table above got there first.
What's in it: every automation type, unlimited automations and keywords, the follow gate, full analytics, the unified inbox. The free plan has the same features as paid — only the allowance differs, which is the opposite of the pattern in "What does a free tier actually cost you?" above, where the missing trigger is usually the price. Paid is $9.99/month for 10,000 DMs or $19.99/month for 30,000, and above 30,000 it's $1 per extra 1,000.
A DM means each message we send on your behalf, so by the two-message rule further up this page, a converted comment costs two — the opener, then the link. Follow-gate prompts aren't counted, so switching the gate on doesn't change what a conversation costs you. Set against the table: 1,000 DMs a month is double CreatorFlow's 500 and level with LinkDM's 1,000, except LinkDM's free plan carries their branding on the message and ours doesn't.
There is also a second way to run at no cost, with no ceiling at all, and it's a trade rather than a tier. Switch attribution on for an automation and the delivered message carries a Powered by inDM button beneath your own — in exchange, nothing that automation sends is billed. Not the opener, not the follow-gate prompts, not the link. It is the same trade LinkDM and ReplyRush make on their free tiers, with one difference worth stating plainly: ours is opt-in, set per automation, and off by default — a choice rather than the price of admission.
Where free stops working
Every free tier on this page runs on the same official Instagram API, which means none of them can exceed the platform's own limits — 750 private replies per hour, a 24-hour messaging window, and no cold DMs to people who haven't engaged first. Those ceilings apply to the private reply mechanism itself and to the messaging window around it, so they are the same on every plan. A free plan is not a weaker version of the API. It is the same API with a smaller allowance in front of it.
What free genuinely cannot survive is a post that outperforms. The allowance is sized for a normal month, the ceiling arrives mid-conversation, and the people who commented after it are the ones who never hear back. That is the moment worth planning for, and it is not an argument for paying now — it is an argument for knowing which number you'll hit and roughly when.
And "free" is the fastest-decaying fact on this page. Every figure here carries the date we read it. If you are reading this well after those dates, open the pricing pages before you decide — including ours.
If you want the mechanism rather than the money, how Instagram DM automation works covers the two-message flow every tool here is built on, and what Instagram permits covers the rules all of them share.
