The ManyChat API manages contacts and sends content, and its published reference has no way to create or edit an automation. ManyChat's API reference, read on 6 November 2026, lists 34 operations for a Manychat account: find and tag contacts, set their custom fields, send a message or an existing flow to one contact, and list the account's flows. None of the 34 creates, edits or publishes a flow or sets a keyword trigger. ManyChat publishes no MCP server of its own, and the ManyChat MCP servers that exist are built by third parties on the same API.

This page sets out what the ManyChat API does, what it does not, how it handles Instagram, and what the MCP servers built on it can reach. Every statement about the API comes from ManyChat's own reference at api.manychat.com/swagger unless it says otherwise, and the sources are listed at the end.

What can the ManyChat API do?

The ManyChat API works on the contacts and content of one Manychat account. Its reference groups the operations in three sets:

  • The account. Read the account's details, list and create tags, list and create custom fields, read and set account-wide fields, list the account's flows and folders, and list its growth tools.
  • Contacts. Find a contact by name, by a custom field, or by email or phone. Read a contact's record, add or remove tags, set custom fields, and create or update a contact.
  • Sending. Send a message to one contact, or start an existing flow for one contact.

A separate, smaller set covers the Manychat profile you sign in with, and it does one thing: make a single-use link that installs one of your templates.

In practice this suits a team that wants its own systems to talk to the people already in ManyChat. A shop can tag a contact when they buy, a booking tool can fill in a custom field, and a form can start a follow-up flow for the person who filled it in.

Can the ManyChat API create a flow or a comment-to-DM automation?

No, not through the operations ManyChat publishes. The only two operations in the reference that touch flows list the account's flows, by name and folder, and start an existing flow for one contact. The reference has no operation that creates, edits, publishes or deletes a flow, and none that sets a keyword trigger, so an Instagram comment-to-DM automation has to be built in ManyChat's own builder.

ManyChat's community says the same. A ManyChat community moderator answered in July 2025 that creating or editing flows through the API is not possible, and a feature request posted in April 2026 by a user running several Instagram accounts asks ManyChat to add it. Neither thread carries a reply from ManyChat staff.

What a script can do instead is change what a fixed flow says. A flow can read a contact's custom fields, so a script that sets a field before it starts the flow changes the content without changing the flow.

Does the ManyChat API work with Instagram?

Yes, for contacts who reached your Instagram account through ManyChat. A contact's record in the reference carries their Instagram username and Instagram ID, and ManyChat's documentation for sending content names Instagram as one of the channels a message can be addressed to. Every address in the API starts with /fb/, and the same addresses cover Instagram contacts.

Instagram's own rules apply to what the API sends. The reference's error list for sending content includes one for a contact whose last interaction was over 24 hours ago, which is Instagram's 24-hour messaging window. ManyChat's documentation also says Instagram messages sent this way cannot carry video.

Which ManyChat plan includes the API?

ManyChat's API is a paid feature, starting on Pro by the most recent accounts we could read. ManyChat's help article on the API, in its September 2024 version, calls the API key a Pro feature. A ManyChat community moderator wrote in April 2026, after ManyChat's pricing change of March 2026, that API access runs from Pro to Advanced. ManyChat's pricing page did not load for us on 6 November 2026, so check your own plan before you build.

Each Manychat account has its own key, generated under Settings, then API, according to the same help article. The reference has no way to switch accounts with one key, so a team running 10 Instagram accounts on ManyChat holds 10 keys, one for each Manychat account. Can ManyChat manage multiple Instagram accounts covers why each Instagram account is its own Manychat account.

How fast can you call the ManyChat API?

ManyChat sets a pace for each operation. The reference allows sending content at 25 calls a second and starting a flow at 20 a second, with no more than 100 flow starts for one contact in an hour. Other operations allow between 10 and 100 calls a second, and changes to the account's tags and fields allow 10. ManyChat's 2024 help article adds that an account that goes past these may have its calls stopped for 24 hours.

Is there a ManyChat MCP server?

Not from ManyChat. An MCP server is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT use a tool, and what an Instagram MCP server is explains the term. ManyChat's API reference describes none. The official MCP Registry lists one ManyChat server, published by a third party called usefulapi, and several developers publish their own on GitHub. A ManyChat community feature request posted on 30 September 2026 asks ManyChat to offer one, with no reply from ManyChat staff.

Every third-party ManyChat MCP server we read connects to the same public API, so it inherits the same reach. An assistant connected through one can find contacts, tag them, set fields, send a message and start an existing flow. It cannot build a flow or a keyword trigger, because the API underneath cannot. Whether ManyChat itself works inside ChatGPT is answered in does ManyChat work with ChatGPT.

What if you want automations built from code or by an assistant?

inDM's API creates the comment-to-DM automation itself. Your code calls https://api.indm.social/v1 to find a reel, create an automation on it with a keyword and a link, check it and set it live, which is the step the ManyChat API leaves to its builder. It works on every inDM plan, Free included, and one key reaches every Instagram account in the workspace. The Instagram automation API page covers it in full.

The same automations can be built by asking. inDM's Instagram MCP server is in ChatGPT's plugin directory, installs with no Developer Mode, and drafts, checks and sets automations live from a chat.

Both are built so that nothing sends through them. Only a live automation sends, and it sends the words you approved.

Where the ManyChat API is the better fit

The ManyChat API earns its place where the work is about contacts across channels. It reaches WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram contacts as well as Instagram ones, and it can send a message or a flow to one contact the moment your own system decides to, such as straight after a purchase. inDM's API sends nothing itself and works on Instagram only, so a team whose systems need to message a specific contact on demand will find that in ManyChat.

The honest boundary

  • This page reads ManyChat's reference directly. ManyChat's help centre and pricing page returned a bot check on 6 November 2026, so the plan and the key details come from the September 2024 version of its help article, held by the Internet Archive, and from community moderators, who are not ManyChat staff.
  • A reference shows what is published, not everything that exists. ManyChat labels its API reference beta, and an operation outside it would not show up here.
  • ManyChat changes. A future version of the API or an official MCP server would change this page's answer, and ManyChat's own documentation is the one that applies.
